: The 2023 Sudan Civil War, involving the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marks a devastating chapter in Sudan's turbulent history. Beginning in April 2023, the war's epicentre was in the capital city of Khartoum and the Darfur region. The conflict resulted in the tragic deaths of between 9,000 and 10,000 people, with 6,000 to 12,000 others injured. The human cost extended beyond this, as over 4.8 million people were internally displaced, and more than 1.3 million fled as refugees.

The RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan "Hemedti" Dagalo, and the SAF, under the command of Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, engaged in a power struggle over control of key government sites in Khartoum, including the Presidential Palace and Khartoum International Airport. This struggle intensified with the involvement of various rebel groups, including the SPLM-N (al-Hilu) and factions of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), contributing to a rapidly escalating and multifaceted conflict.

Hemedti accused Burhan of instigating confrontations and conspiring to reinstate the deposed leader Omar al-Bashir, further complicating the internal dynamics of the conflict. Despite efforts toward a ceasefire, intense fighting continued in Khartoum and other regions, marked by civilian assaults, looting, and widespread destruction. Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, highlighted the dire humanitarian crisis and human rights violations occurring in Sudan, including severe sexual and gender-based violence, predominantly perpetrated by RSF personnel or those in RSF uniforms. The UN's involvement, despite facing access difficulties and attacks on aid workers, has been crucial in delivering aid to millions, though it remains insufficient against the scale of need.

The war in Sudan represents not only a tragic humanitarian crisis but also a complex interplay of power, regional politics, and longstanding tensions. The international community's role remains critical in facilitating peace and stability in a nation long plagued by conflict and instability.

: The 2023 earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, starting on February 6, constituted one of the most devastating seismic events in recent history. A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria, followed by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake later the same day. The epicenter of the first earthquake was near Gaziantep, Turkey, and the second one occurred near Ekinözü. These earthquakes were the largest in Turkey since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake, and among the strongest ever recorded in the Levant region.

The damage was extensive, affecting approximately 350,000 square kilometers—an area about the size of Germany—and impacting an estimated 14 million people, which is about 16% of Turkey's population. The United Nations estimated that around 1.5 million people were left homeless due to the disaster.

The death toll from these earthquakes was staggering, with 59,259 confirmed deaths (50,783 in Turkey and 8,476 in Syria), making it the deadliest earthquake in modern Turkey's history and the deadliest worldwide since the 2010 Haiti earthquake. In terms of economic impact, damages were estimated at around US$148.8 billion in Turkey and US$14.8 billion in Syria.

Rescue and relief efforts were complicated by damaged infrastructure, winter storms, and disrupted communications. Despite these challenges, a significant international response ensued, with more than 141,000 people from 94 countries participating in the rescue operations, which included a 60,000-strong search-and-rescue force, 5,000 health workers, and 30,000 volunteers.

: Today, we start another year in review with this past year being called . This year is a bit different than the past year due to bills passed in Canada, where we are located, due to controversial laws passed this year by the Liberal Government.

In April, Bill C-11 called the Amendments to the Broadcasting Act, forces social media platforms and streaming platforms to change their feeds to show content produced in Canada. Many Canadian content creators and Google were against this bill.

Bill C-18, The Online News Act was passed in June, this year and forces Meta and to pay Canadian Publishers for their users sharing news stories from their platforms. responded by suspending and banning the sharing of news articles on their platforms such as Facebook & Instagram. Google reached a deal in Late November to pay news publishers in Canada, $100 Million per year CAD.

We at WNews have been vocal against these two bills especially Bill C 18 as it erodes the rights of the press in Canada and affects smaller news outlets. We recommend that you check out stopbillc18.com which provides insight into the bill and why we are against this bill.
