Are we business people in coffee or coffee people in business?

Fact – people change.

Expediency replaces passion. Necessity overrides cherished values. People accept employment doing a job or working for a company they previously disparaged. Not bad or wrong, just reality.

And the Best Marketing Strategy at SXSW Is … Kindness

As the three hour party RSVP line outside an Austin bar stretches around the corner, no one wonders why a surprising number of people seem to be wearing red clown noses. To my right, a guy walks towards me with a light up disco ball covering his head. He passes nonchalantly by a woman dressed in medieval armour wearing a helmet with two foot horns. Standing beside them is a gentleman holding a yellow sign declaring his availability as a real estate agent for anyone considering moving to Austin. Nearby a strange medley provides a suitably odd musical score to this outdoor parade as a violinist wearing a werewolf mask, a bucket drummer and two distant outdoor bands merge into an accidental quartet.

Defining Your Content Efforts Through the "Five Whys"

By now you’ve heard all about the importance of creating great content - how content is crucial to your social media and SEO efforts, how you need to be creating original, shareable work to build brand awareness and authority. You’ve gone through it, it all makes sense, now it’s time to get on with the doing. But where do you start? Writing great content is a challenge in itself, but even before that, you need to determine what you’re going to write about? You’re working on establishing community engagement and expanding reach through compelling material - it can’t be product and company news alone. It needs to be fresh, it needs to stand out. Brands Don’t Exist, Only Real People Do

The surprising thing is, Todaymade is made of real people.

It’s not as if you didn’t know that, but if you’re like me, you often forget you’re dealing with real people when you’re online. They’re just faceless brands, maybe, because the usual cues (expressions, micro-reactions) that tell us we’re talking to actual people aren’t there.

What does this mean for real people connecting to brands, and vice versa?

There are four aspects to keepin’ it real, as a brand, online. Because brands are boring. People aren’t.

Social Startups: Nimble Helps You Build and Maintain Your Social Capital

Saying “thank you” face to face, praise for a job well done, a thoughtful gift, a handwritten note. These are all ways we build trust in our relationships like we build our bank account with deposits. In our world of social media, “social networks have value,” too, which is becoming known as “social capital,” as Wikipedia explains. A positive Facebook mention, retweeting a business associate’s blog post, congratulating a colleague on LinkedIn for their promotion, and sharing helpful information with a client through the customer community are all ways we make social deposits.

“Personal branding is the key to your professional success, and we believe that your relationships make or break your business success,” says Eric Quanstrom, CMO/VP of Marketing and Sales of the leading social relationship management software. “Nimble transforms who you know into how you grow. We built it to smartly manage your relationships in one place. With intelligent context and insights to your contacts, you can be quick, agile, and smart with your relationships."

Is Your Earned Marketing Triangulated?

A few years ago, I wrote a story for Forbes about Gillette’s Summer Job campaign as I found the level of the campaign's channel integration to be of interest.

In that case Gillette, the Procter & Gamble shaving brand that I recently ripped for losing touch with its audience, forced its advertising and PR agencies into a room and told them to not come out until they had developed a smart program. Perplexingly, Gillette didn’t then integrate the campaign into all of its channels in surround sound — which really should be a must today as consumers are parsing time online, more rabidly using mobile, still watching some television, listening to less and less radio, and have largely left print publications alone at the alter.

10 Bold Strategies for Increasing the Click Factor

As a writer who, on a daily basis, competes with premium and traditional news outlets for readers’ time (oh, and Buzzfeed too), I’m keen to learn how I can get you to read and share my story.

Arm-twisting and blackmail aside, I recognize one of the more critical things that gets consumers of digital content to click and share is an exciting headline.

Therefore, I’ve consulted a few marketers and members of the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invite-only organization comprised of the world’s most promising young entrepreneurs, for their responses on:

Q. What’s your secret for creating highly shareable headlines for your blog posts and articles?

Social Business: Is There Anything Beyond Social Media Marketing?

One of the big buzz words being thrown about by the digirati (aka intelligentsia of digital marketing) and social media marketing mavens is the concept of a social business. Among the bigger groups, IBM and the Dachis Group seem to be deking it out on claiming the social business space. But, if you are like me, you might be asking what exactly is a social business? Maybe you might even be curious to know if there is a unifying theory?

What the heck is a social business?
In terms of defining social business, there are two veins. Taking the high road, a social business is about creating a "new kind of capitalism that serves humanity's most pressing needs." Put on the map by the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus, who wrote "Building Social Business," a social business is a business with a noble cause. Accordingly, the central tenet is not about making profits, but putting the business at the service of a higher purpose.
