The Government of Canada is matching donations made to the Canadian Red Cross as part of its 2026 flood appeal, including donations supporting communities affected by Ottawa’s historic Canada Day flooding.

The July 1 storm brought a record 118.4 mm of precipitation to Ottawa, flooding roads and homes, cancelling Canada Day celebrations and prompting more than 700 reports of downed wires and electrical hazards.

More than two months later, the impacts are still being felt, with the City reporting 5,800 flooded basements.

The federal government says the donation match is intended to help communities recover from the devastating flooding. β€ΌοΈπŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

Could paid street parking be a thing of the past in Ottawa?

Mayoral candidate Alex Lawson is promising to eliminate all 4,337 paid on-street parking spaces across Ottawa if elected this fall, turning them back into free parking.

Lawson says the change would start with Westboro and Wellington West, where paid parking was introduced last year. He’s also proposing a minimum two-hour parking time limit on city streets.

🚫 No-stopping zones, fire routes, school zones, loading zones, accessible spaces and winter overnight parking bans would remain in place.

The city collected $9.78 million from on-street parking in 2025, while it cost about $7.42 million to operate.

Lawson says parking garages and municipal lots would continue to charge, while Bylaw officers would focus on enforcing parking rules that protect safety rather than paid meters. Do you think it’s a good idea? πŸ€”
