Save the dates! Archives Awareness Week will be April 2 to April 5, 2024. The theme this year, “Access your Archives.”

Throughout April, the AAO Instagram will also take part in the annual Archives of Ontario-led social media campaign to promote the Archeion service and descriptions in the database.

As part of AWW, we are bringing back our featured Instagram vignettes from you! On Thursday, April 5, 2024, the AAO will publish a series of short vignettes submitted by membership via our Instagram account.

As per tradition, the AAO will be hosting a Twitter Takeover event. On Tuesday, April 2, 2024, a roster of guest archivists will take over the AAO Twitter account to answer your questions and comments related to work in the archives.

We encourage members to program events and engage in social media initiatives. Let us know if you would like us to promote your own AAW event on our social media, website, and the Original Order of Things newsletter.

As a part of AAW, we are asking for your donations in support of the Shirley Spragge Bursary program, which provides financial assistance for students, new professionals, or archivists in financial need to cover the registration and travel to the AAO's annual conference.

The AAO is looking for a new editor for Off the Record!

Are you an AAO member who has enjoyed reading or contributing to Off the Record (OTR), the quarterly digital newsletter published by the AAO? Or are you looking for opportunities to connect with and learn from other members of the archival community in Ontario? Or perhaps you’re an archivist with great organizational and editorial skills to share with the AAO?

If so, the AAO has a volunteer opportunity for you as the new editor of Off the Record!

Off the Record publishes quality writing on archives by the AAO community, the AAO Board of Directors, chapters, special interest groups and AAO staff on a variety of subjects. Issues include articles sharing professional knowledge, updates on outreach activities, profiles of archival workers, features on archives-related projects and events, and news and announcements about the AAO’s activities.

Off the Record is published four (4) times per year in the spring, summer, fall and winter. Back issues are located on the AAO website.

The OTR Editor is responsible for collecting, editing, and formatting submissions, and publishing the issue. The Editor also assists with coordinating advertising and reporting annually to the AAO Board of Directors. The term for this position is typically two (2) years with an option for renewal. This position can also be configured as a co-editorship for two people on a staggered term basis.

The AAO East/est is pleased to offer the following in-person workshop on property research in partnership with the Museum of Lennox and Addington, Napanee. This workshop is targeted towards researchers, but new professionals or anyone seeking to brush up on their skills are welcome! Registration is open until April 18th or all spots are filled.

Unlocking the Past: Keys to your Home’s Story

Are you curious about your house's past, but don't know where to start? Wishing the walls could share their secrets? Come join us on April 20th for an enlightening workshop and learn how to unravel the history of your house. Our guest speaker Megan Hobson will share her professional insight on navigating and interpreting historical records and will equip you with the tools to unlock your own home’s story.

In this two-part workshop, Megan will kick off the first session with an overview of available records and techniques for interpreting them effectively. From census data to property deeds, you'll gain the skills needed to piece together your home's story.

In the second part, dive deeper into practical application. Through insightful case studies of historic properties from Lennox and Addington county, you'll witness firsthand how to uncover the captivating tales woven into the fabric of your own home.

Format: Presentation, examples, discussion.

Megan Hobson is a heritage specialist with an MA in Architectural History from the University of Toronto and a Diploma in Heritage Conservation from the Willowbank School of Restoration. Her firm Hobson Heritage Consulting provides a full range of professional heritage planning services for public and private sector clients including heritage reports, heritage permit applications, heritage planning approvals and heritage grant applications. Her practice focuses on sustainable approaches to the renewal and revitalization of heritage buildings and districts through creative collaboration with property owners, approval authorities, community groups, architects, engineers, sustainability consultants and specialized building trades and crafts.

The AAOEe is pleased to offer the following in-person workshop on digital preservation. This workshop is meant for individuals or institutions seeking a practical, easily-implemented approach to developing their digital preservation program. Registration is open until March 4.

Getting started with Digital Preservation: a simple way to begin your digital preservation program using (mostly) free tools

This half-day workshop will introduce participants to the fundamentals of digital preservation good practice and offer concrete, accessible approaches to getting started with digital preservation. Attendees will provide a summary of their current (and/or projected) born-digital and digitized collections.

The workshop will introduce and demonstrate the practical application of digital preservation concepts, including intellectual control, checksums and fixity, file format identification, redundancy, and responsible data storage. We will then review some of the strategies and tools that will help attendees to establish control over their digital heritage material, such as registry templates, MD5Summer (and other checksum software), and DROID and the PRONOM database. Attendees will come away from the workshop ready to create simple workflows to enable process-based digital preservation for their archival collections.

The audience for the workshop includes individuals or institutions seeking a practical, easily implemented approach to developing their digital preservation program.

Format: Presentation, handout (furnished prior to event), examples, discussion.

About the Instructors:

Emily Monks-Leeson is a digital archivist with the Digital Integration section of Library and Archives Canada (LAC), where she is engaged in technical appraisal, capacity-building and program development for LAC's digital preservation program. Emily has facilitated preservation and access in digital and analogue collections for over a decade, including curating web collections for LAC's Web and Social Media Preservation Program, generating pathfinder tools for online content development, and supporting archival collections-building at a national museum. She holds a Master's degree from the University of Toronto (Archives; Book History and Print Culture) and currently sits on the iPres 2024 Program Committee, the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) Workforce Development sub-committee, and the AAO's Digital Access and Preservation Committee.

Kevin Palendat is a digital preservation practitioner and web curator currently working as a Senior Project Manager with Library and Archives Canada’s Web and Social Media Preservation Program. Kevin holds an M.A. in Archival Studies from the University of Manitoba and has served in numerous archival and preservation-oriented roles across Canada and in several global contexts. He maintains an abiding interest in and love for documentary history in all its many guises.

Julienne Pascoe completed her Masters in Film + Photographic Preservation and Collections Management (F+PPCM) at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and subsequently worked in a variety of cultural heritage sectors including as a Collections Assistant at the Art Gallery of Ontario and Special Collections researcher at TMU Archives + Special Collections. Her interest in all things digital led her to pursue a Post-Masters Archives Certificate specialization in Digital Stewardship at the Graduate School for Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at Simmons College in Boston. During her studies she taught the graduate course, Digital Applications and Collections Management in the F+PPCM program at TMU, which focused on providing hands-on experience with metadata and digitization projects. Upon completion of her studies, she took on the role of Lead Metadata Architect at Canadiana.org, a position she held for four years before joining Library and Archives Canada (LAC) as a Digital Archivist within the Digital Integration section. She currently participates in a variety of committees and working groups, including as Co-Chair of the Digital Access and Preservation Committee (DAPC) of the AAO, as well as a member of the Digital Preservation Coalition’s (DPC) Committee on Advocacy and Community Engagement (ACE).

This half-day workshop introduces tools and good practices in digital preservation.
