On the program this week, we start off with some early Genesis and a track from the Trespass (1970) album, before we get right into the first set with Companyia Elèctrica Dharma from the Catalunya region of Spain, composer and keysmith Anssi Tikanmaki and his Finnish Landscapes, Primus for all the reasons you can imagine, and a recently discovered (at least for me) Ottawa loungecore project by the name of Tiny Circus.

If you stick around for the second set, we'll also be checking really great stuff by the likes of Finnish composer and keysmith (another one!) Juha Kujanpää, followed by New Brunswick's jazz-rock-soul-prog outfit Les Moontunes ; Kimberley, BC's Phaeton with brand new music dropping tomorrow, and another slice of Raphael Weinroth-Browne's new one, Lifeblood.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, a bunch of teenagers got together in France in 1978, called themselves Skryvania, and recorded an album bearing the same name. We'll hear a track off their one-and-only record before finishing the evening off in Japan, with help from Korekyojinn accompanied by KBB's violinist Akihisa Tsuboi.

On the program this week, we'll begin with one of the early troubadours of the Quebec 70s scene, Gilles Valiquette, from his sophomore release Deuxième arrêt. Into the first half of the program, we'll survey four decades and four countries' worth of tunes starting with Italian prog one-shots Corte dei miracoli and their self-titled 1976 LP, as well as choice picks the likes of Italo-American guitar whiz Al Di Meola, Morte Macabre out of Sweden (and featuring members of Anekdoten and Landberk), before settling on music by much-loved local guitar hero and prof Wayne Eagles, prior to his Oct 24 trio show at the Night Oat.

If you stick around for the second set, we'll also be hearing from the Levin Minnemann Rudess trio off their 2013 eponymous debt, followed by new music from The John Irvine Band out of Edinburgh and percussionist Michel Cloutier's Deep Vibes from up the Ottawa Valley.

Not least, we'll hear from Ottawa cello sensation Raphael Weinroth-Browne about his stunning new record Lifeblood in anticipation of the album launch show happening next Friday evening (Oct 24) at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre here in Ottawa.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, don't miss one of the better Magma-inspired projects Potemkine from their third and final album Nicholas II. The program winds up in Belgrade of all places for some mysterious Yugoprog by TAKO that dates from the late 70s... and sounds pretty darn good.

On the program this week, some early John McLaughlin from the 1970 Devotion album that provides an idea of all the greatness on the way, before we embark on a first set covering four decades that includes Dutch prog masters Supersister, US progmetal pioneers Fates Warning, Montreal fusion guitar slinger Michel Cusson and his band The Wild Unit, rounded off by a delicate turn-of-the-century composition by Sigur Rós.

The second set looks equally potent. First up, we'll be hearing from those unclassifiable Texans The Invincible Czars who'll be in Ottawa next Thursday for a double bill at the Bytowne Cinema, as well as English progressive jazz trio GoGo Penguin set to perform next Friday evening at the NAC. Next up, we'll have tracks from a couple of progrock powerhouses, Bologna's Accordo dei Contrari and Vancouver's own Brass Camel off their latest release, Camel.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, the tradition-meets-modern sound of Malicorne is back in the spotlight with a cut from their En Public live album recorded in Montreal in 1978, before we tip our caps to Geddy and Alex who announced this past week their intent to reform RUSH, with a little help from some talented new friends.

On the program this week, the curtain rises on Cherry Five on Esoteric Recordings, a Roman progressive rock band in the style of Yes whose members gave rise to Goblin shortly after their 1975 debut appeared. We're then setting aside the next 20 minutes for music by Quebec folk rockers Le Temps, EAST from Hungary, Swedish prog royalty The Flower Kings, and the head-imploding audacity of Combat Astronomy out of the UK.

The second set is looking good as well, with contributions from Austrian experimental jazz trio Kompost 3, Canadian guitar slinger Nick Johnston, Norwegian art rockers The O***m Cartel, and rising star on cello Raphael Weinroth-Browne whose much-anticipated new album Lifeblood drops tomorrow.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, the zaniness of Etron Fou Leloublan is back in the spotlight, specifically a track from their 1978 3rd album Les trois fous perdegagnent... Nobody came close to sounding like these guys, and nobody ever will. We'll finish up back where we started, in Italy, with a lovely cut from LATTE E MIELE as heard on their 1973 Papillon LP.

***I received word from listener Andrew last week (merci!!) that last week's pre-recorded episode was not broadcast. So let's do it again.***

On the program this week, we begin with a nod to one of the greats, drummer Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, whose legacy band project performs in Montreal on Sunday evening. Into the first set, stay tuned for some classic Khan from the band's first and last record, Space Shanty (1972), as well as choice selections from late 80s Marillion, Quebec City avant-garde rock ensemble Interférence Sardines and Texas guitar whiz Ron Jarzombek.

As for the second set, it's an all European showcase with tunes from Lithuanian dark folk masters Gyvata, Polish post-jazz/rock project Nene Heroine, the Austro-Swiss trio-quartet The True Harry Nulz, and a great one from VOLA who were back in Montréal last week as part of their North American tour, all the way from Denmark.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, another solid release from a fondly remembered but largely forgotten band, Édition Spéciale, from their third and last album Horizon Digitale (1978). To conclude, it's up to then-16-year old cellist and multi-instrumentalist Raphael Weinroth-Browne and his 2011 Cholera project.

From there, it's off to Iran to check out the awesome new release "Deerand" by Quartet Diminished on MoonJune Records, and new work as well from Toronto trombonist/arranger William Carn off his new one as well, The Unburdening.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, more great fusion from the best known violinist playing this stuff, Jean Luc Ponty circa 1978.... before we end with a most worthy obscurity from Scandinavia and the Swedish group Dice, which also saw the light of day in 1978.

On the program this week, let's kick it off with a real Dutch treat by Ekseption with their exceptional keyboard player Rick van der Linden. We'll sample a track off the band's 1973 sixth LP Trinity before heading into the first set with deep cuts by American fusion drummer Tony Williams, whimsical Canterbury keyboard ace Alan Gowen, Montreal proggers Visible Wind and one of the great Mexican experimental groups, CABEZAS DE CERA.

Moving into the second half, we keep things moving with some brain-tickling selections by New Yorkers Infantephant, Aurum Fusion out of North Bay, Saywhat out of Norway, and the brand new release from Colorado-based guitar slinger and composer Hall Music, off his new one Effects.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, the time machine takes us back to 1978 and the sixth Ange album, Guet-apens, before we wind up in Hamilton, Ontario for some of the finest symphonic prog anywhere on the planet by Monarch Trail.

On this week's show, one of the best of Quebec's long lost bands resurfaces in the form of MaelstromQuebec, off their self-titled 1976 debut. Thanks to everyone at ProgQuébec for getting this very worthy release issued on CD.

From there, the first segment will feature the typical round-up of excellence, coming to us from Anthony Phillips (ex-Genesis), the late Danish guitarist and arranger Robin Taylor, Toronto instrumental institution Do Make Say Think off their 1998 debut, and Texas curiosities The Invincible Czars to provide a music soundtrack to some current statewide happenings.

Moving into the second half, one of the most creative forces in percussion today, Morgan Ågren, returns with a track from his 2017 solo release Through The Eyes of a Morgchestra. We'll also be checking out recent albums from Moncton prog metallers Omnivide, the zany Frenchness of AQUASERGE out of Toulouse, and another Swedish offering to round off the set: music from Somewhere's 2025 Bridges album.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, we'll check out another veritable 70s classic from Mona Lisa, off their 1978 fourth LP Avant qu'il ne soit trop t**d, before winding down the show on the tip of the Iberian Peninsula in Portugal with the early work of Banda do Casaco.

On this week's show, some classic British jazz from Isotope to kick things off, from the band's second release and the only one to feature Hugh Hopper on bass. From there, we'll jump into the first segment with music by Dutch flautist Chris Hinze of the Chris Hinze Combination, whose album Sister Slick is one of the lesser known but equally worthy European jazz fusion records of that era. We'll also be hearing from Frank Zappa and an instrumental cut from his Make a Jazz Noise Here live album, plus tunes by Quebec neo-prog outfit Irrgarten and Bay Area avant-metal/RIO specialists miRthkon.

Moving into the second half, a nod to Ottawa local heroes The Haig, an alternative band who put everything they had into their 2016 full-length release Ghost of Nuclear Future. We'll sample a track off that record before easing into works by beloved British prog outfit Sanguine Hum; genre-bending jazz project Nene Heroine out of Gdansk, Poland; before we finish up with a sublime multi-genre effort by Moncton, NB's Les Moontunes and the excellent Elephant Wizard album.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, how about something by way of Toulouse down south— that would be the second album by Potemkine on Soleil Zeuhl records. The program finishes up in another southern locale, Mexicali, Mexico, with the symphonic prog of CAST.

On this week's show, regardless of how you're feeling, Happy The Man is never an inappropriate opener — especially something off their self-titled 1977 debut. Into the first set, you can feel confident that you're going to hear a few rarities, including music by Barcelona's Urbana, Japanese jazz fusion guitar whiz Kazumi Watanabe, Montréal fusion guitar whiz Jerry De Villiers Jr., and music from a long-lived Ottawa instrumental rock behemoth, The Reverb Syndicate prior to their Saturday night gig at Irene's.

Moving into the second half, we're back in the Nordic world checking out music by folktronicans OOPUS from Estonia, Sweden prog rockers Gösta Berlings Saga, the mind-bending artistry of guitarist Ben Monder off his 2024 triple album Planetarium, and new music as well from cellist George Crotty who plays Montreal with his trio two weeks from now.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, we head back into the lush world of Pulsar from the Lyon symph rock band's 1977 third album Hallowe'en, before ending on the music of Zimbabwe-via-Boston guitarist Matt Greenwood, as heard on his fab 2022 release, Atlas.

On this week's show, we begin with a touch of Brazil and the music of Airto Moreira, off the percussionist's 1973 release Fingers on CTI Records. In keeping with the international theme, we'll also be checking out works by pioneering Spanish progressive band Granada, Brit jazz fusion legends Brand X, the consistently great Penn state prog of Echolyn and down to the Dominican Republic with El Trio.

Moving into the second half, it all begins with a newly-released on ECM Records 2012 live performance of a Chick Corea composition, The Visitors, featuring vibes player Gary Burton and pianist Kirill Gerstein. We're also tipping the cap this week to our good friend guitarist Wayne Eagles, as he readies his trio for a live engagement this evening at the Art House Café starting at 7pm. To do that, how about something off his 2015 Trio \ DEF release with bassist Marc-André Drouin and drummer Ian Froman... before closing out the set with Montréal prog mainstays Karcius followed French tech/prog death metallists Fractal Universe.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, the violin of Jean Luc Ponty is back in the spotlight, this time off his 1977 classic Enigmatic Ocean LP, before wrapping it up with long-lost Quebec City progressive rock group Pour Nous Autres who recently released their 1976 debut LP nearly 5 decades after entering the studio.
