Please tune in tonight (August 7, 2025) from 7:30-9:00pm (Eastern) for another more or less intact episode of La Villa Strangiato — only on CHUO 89.1 FM in Ottawa. Remember that you can always access the live broadcast via the station's website at chuo[.]fm and over here at tunein[.]com.

On this week's show, regardless of how you're feeling, Happy The Man is never an inappropriate opener — especially something off their self-titled 1977 debut. Into the first set, you can feel confident that you're going to hear a few rarities, including music by Barcelona's Urbana, Japanese jazz fusion guitar whiz Kazumi Watanabe, Montréal fusion guitar whiz Jerry De Villiers Jr., and music from a long-lived Ottawa instrumental rock behemoth, The Reverb Syndicate prior to their Saturday night gig at Irene's.

Moving into the second half, we're back in the Nordic world checking out music by folktronicans OOPUS from Estonia, Sweden prog rockers Gösta Berlings Saga, the mind-bending artistry of guitarist Ben Monder off his 2024 triple album Planetarium, and new music as well from cellist George Crotty who plays Montreal with his trio two weeks from now.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, we head back into the lush world of Pulsar from the Lyon symph rock band's 1977 third album Hallowe'en, before ending on the music of Zimbabwe-via-Boston guitarist Matt Greenwood, as heard on his fab 2022 release, Atlas.

Thanks again for tuning in these past 25 years — especially during these strange days. "I care if you listen".

Please tune in tonight (July 31, 2025) from 7:30-9:00pm (Eastern) for another largely tariff-exempt episode of La Villa Strangiato — only on CHUO 89.1 FM in Ottawa. Remember that you can always access the live broadcast via the station's website at chuo[.]fm and over here at tunein[.]com.

On this week's show, we begin with a touch of Brazil and the music of Airto Moreira, off the percussionist's 1973 release Fingers on CTI Records. In keeping with the international theme, we'll also be checking out works by pioneering Spanish progressive band Granada, Brit jazz fusion legends Brand X, the consistently great Penn state prog of Echolyn and down to the Dominican Republic with El Trio.

Moving into the second half, it all begins with a newly-released on ECM Records 2012 live performance of a Chick Corea composition, The Visitors, featuring vibes player Gary Burton and pianist Kirill Gerstein. We're also tipping the cap this week to our good friend guitarist Wayne Eagles, as he readies his trio for a live engagement this evening at the Art House Café starting at 7pm. To do that, how about something off his 2015 Trio \ DEF release with bassist Marc-André Drouin and drummer Ian Froman... before closing out the set with Montréal prog mainstays Karcius followed French tech/prog death metallists Fractal Universe.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, the violin of Jean Luc Ponty is back in the spotlight, this time off his 1977 classic Enigmatic Ocean LP, before wrapping it up with long-lost Quebec City progressive rock group Pour Nous Autres who recently released their 1976 debut LP nearly 5 decades after entering the studio. Please tune in tonight (July 24, 2025) from 7:30-9:00pm (Eastern) for another fittingly Ozpicious episode of La Villa Strangiato — only on CHUO 89.1 FM in Ottawa. Remember that you can always access the live broadcast via the station's website at chuo[.]fm and over here at tunein[.]com.

On this week's show, a little bit of everything including an opening tribute to the recently departed Prince of Darkness, and a selection off Black Sabbath's classic fourth record, Volume 4.

Later in the program, we'll be hearing from local drummer and vibes player Michel Cloutier as he discusses his ambitious jazz fusion project Deep Vibes responsible for two great records to date, including this year's Now Before in collaboration with guitarist and composer David Campbell.

To open the first set, let's dive right into the tasty progressive stylings of British minstrels Gryphon, the symph prog of Kenso from Japan, German prog metallists Sieges Even and California math rockers Upsilon Acrux.

Moving into the second half, the spotlight rests solely on Canadian artists, including local piano trio Primary Colours who play a Rideau Canal gig this Saturday afternoon by the NAC; Toronto prog rockers Half Past Four and a tune from their recently issued EP Finding Time; brand new music from visionary Toronto-based trombonist and composer William Carn; and that promised interview with Deep Vibes' founder Michel Cloutier.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, we veer off into the world of Ripaille and music from this Nantes progressive folk group's one and only album, La vieille que l'on brûla [1977], re-issued on Musea Records.

But the program finishes with a Polish project that recently came onto my radar, Ninja Episokpat, a compelling mix of rock, electronica, improv and other odds and ends.

Please tune in tonight (July 17, 2025) from 7:30-9:00pm (Eastern) for another thoroughly consulted episode of La Villa Strangiato — only on CHUO 89.1 FM in Ottawa. Remember that you can always access the live broadcast via the station's website at chuo[.]fm and over here at tunein[.]com.

On this week's show, we begin up north in Sweden with music by the original prog pioneer Bo Hansson off his third studio release Mellanväsen. From there, we'll hear one of the stronger tracks by Quebec one-shot "fusion-disco" project Le Pouls, Bay Area ambient/new age consortium Ancient Future, a stone cold classic from UK space rockers Ozric Tentacles, and a beautiful mix of contemporary jazz meets Brazil with the Fabio Mentz Quarteto.

Into the second set, it's back to the Nordic region this time for some clarity thanks to Confusion Field, the Parisian fusion tentet Ghost Rhythms, and Ottawa's very own Finely Tuned Elephant who are on stage tonight helping opening for MoonJune Records recording artists PAKT— a fusion supergroup of sorts featuring Percy Jones on bass (Brand X), guitarist Alex Skolnick (Testament), drummer Kenny Grohowski (Imperial Triumphant) and jack-of-all-trades Tim Motzer (too many projects to mention!). https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100071761532912

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, we'll hear a cut from one of the great debuts of the decade, Shylock's 1977 debut Gialorgues. But the program finishes with Montreal's binational Kite Trio, and music from their third and last album, Slightly Higher in Canada.

On this week's show, we'll be spinning a bunch of favourites and lesser-known artists deserving of your ear. Up first, a stone cold Canterburian classic from Hatfield and the North off the venerable quartet's 1973 self-titled debut. We'll follow that up with local prog-folk collective Connivence, avant-prog desert dwellers Pocket Orchestra, the mystical Jade Warrior out of the UK and Moncton's own les Païens.

Making up the second set, we radically change gears to sample VIRVUM, a Swiss prog-tech-death metal band that wowed the Ottawa faithful last week, as well as choice cuts by Polish experimental jazz duo Skalpel, Latvian dark folkists JUUK, and Montreal jazz-rock upstart Ariane Racicot from her latest release, Danser avec le feu.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, a great one from drummer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Patrick Forgas from his 1977 debut release Cocktail. To finish, let's wrap up with Joy of a Toy off SOFT MACHINE's quirky yet landmark 1968 debut.

On this week's show, we begin with one of those classic Italian groups from the 70s, Locanda delle Fate, who dropped a fabulous debut record in 1977 then promptly disappeared only to resurface again 20 years later with a second album. We'll hear a track from the great first album, then mosey along for tracks in the first set by Hugh Hopper and his Monster Band, pan-franco Canadian band Garolou, moody Swedes Anekdoten, and their slightly more upbeat neighbours Scarlet Thread from Finland.

Making up the second set, we'll open with music by experimental jazzers The Plastic Waste Band who are in town on Sunday night from Montreal for a gig at Night Oat, followed by Norway's Saywhat featuring guitarist Cenk Erdoğan, Sweden's Somewhere and their new album Bridges, and Crutches out of Leipzig, Germany with a tune from their fun new record, Four Lttr Words.

For this week's Pioneers and Legends of French Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion, things go in an opposite direction this week with a track from RIO madcaps Etron Fou Leloublan. That's a hard act to follow, so we'll ask Vancouver's SET PHASERS TO PROG to help close out the show.

On this week's show, we mark le Saint-Jean and Canada Day all in one! The first half will be completely devoted to Quebecois artists singing en français, including the venerable Serge Fiori of Harmonium who departed this world on this annual French Canadian holiday. Music in the set as well from the likes of Aut'Chose, Poliquin, Morse Code and guitarist André Duchesne.

For our pre-Canada Day celebration, it doesn't get much better than an assortment of prog and prog-adjacent tracks by Bend Sinister, JESSA and The Jessica Stuart Few, Divine Realm, Code 18, Peggy Lee & Cole Schmidt, and Brass Camel.

On this week's show, we're getting set to preview 8 unique talents on stage in the coming 10 days for the Ottawa Jazz Festival: Mike Stern, François Houle, John Hollenbeck, Kneebody, Bill Frisell, Peter Van Huffel's, Shuffle Demons, and local heroes Internet Celebrities.

To round off the show, although they sadly won't be appearing at this year's edition of the festival, we'll also feature MAGMA as part of our Pioneers and Legends of French progrock and jazz fusion, before concluding with brand new music by Toronto-based cellist George Crotty and his Trio, and their fabulous new release Heart Music.

On this week's show, get ready for more folkloric content than usual, beginning with some classic Kebnekajse off the venerable Swedish group's second release, II, from 1973. Moving into the first set, we'll be hearing from Quebec violinist and composer Charles Kacyznski off the maestro's 1979 debut album, plus Baltic bangers from the likes of Swedish accordionist Lars Hollmer, Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Lithuanian dark folk treasures Gyvata.

Into the second set, it's a bit of a mixed bag starting off with Italian proggers Quel Che Disse Il Tuono, as well as music by contemporary Canadian composer Keyan Emami, Danish guitar whiz John Sund off his latest release Bayan, and finally Bridges — the brand new debut from Sweden's Somewhere who initially burst onto the scene with the 12 Days of Progmas way back when.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, we'll peel pack the onion on some ARCHAÏA before drifting off to the hypnotic strains of Montreal duo Éric Fillion and Sylvain Lamirande, otherwise known as SAMARKANDE.

This week's pre-recorded show begins with music from one of the top fusion keysmen of all time, the late great George Duke. We'll hear work from his fourth solo album Faces in Reflection before we jump into a Poland-heavy first set featuring music by SBB, Lizard and Riverside, plus a Canadian cut courtesy of Bertrand Gosselin to mix things up.

Into the second set, the focus is way more in the Americas as we feature choice cuts by Toby Driver and Kevin Hufnagel's Vaura, David Campbell's The Rebel Wheel, Beledo from Uruguay, and Universe Effects out of Quebec City with music from their latest EP, The Distance.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, we turn once more to Magma and a cut from their hard hitting Üdü Wüdü release from 1976. But the program finishes way up here in Lithuania with a live cut from Vilnius jazz mainstays the Dainius Pulauskas Sextet.

This week's pre-recorded show begins with music by Italian jazz rock staple Perigeo, from the band's 1973 debut. Music in the first half by British glam rock darlings Queen, as well as choice cuts by Finnish composer Anssi Tikanmäki, Italian prog outfit Deus Ex Machina, and Toronto neo-folk project Muskox led by multi-instrumentalist Mike Smith.

Into the second set, we set our sights on Poland's LIGHT COORPORATION, PAKT on the MoonJune Records label, recent music by The Aphelion who played a killer show here last week by all accounts, and brand new material by Aaron Shragge's Whispering Worlds.

As part of our ongoing Legends and Pioneers of French progrock and jazz fusion series, it's extra special this week with Edition spéciale on Musea Records getting the nod, before Dewa Budjana takes us home.
