New Music! 💿🥰

The second focus track from my new album Cover Story is a nod to the incomparable Alanis Morissette...her music has influenced me in many ways. When JLP took the world by storm, I marvelled at her fearlessness...she was so completely her own being, in her own way...when the world kept telling her to get back in her box, she landed on the scene handing out box cutters to millions of young people waiting for permission to scream at the sky.

And it was terrifying to me. Because at that time, I was safely tucked away in my box, playing the role I was given, being who I was expected to be. But I was so drawn in and fascinated by her. I wanted that...I wanted to know what that was like...to be unapologetically me. It would take me decades to find her.

There is so much wisdom and honesty in Alanis’ lyric and the shape of her melodies is so distinctive. You can spot an Alanis song 2 bars in...one of Canada’s truly iconic artists.

The song I chose to cover is called Ablaze...it’s a profound expression of motherhood...which captures how I feel about being a mom to my 5 boys and 2 girls.

Alanis performed this song during the pandemic on the Jimmy Fallon show via live stream from her home with a baby on her hip....and slayed. I remember thinking... only Alanis. With a huge smile on my face.
