Vision matters more as we age.
Chronic conditions like diabetes, stroke, and neurological disorders can increase the risk of vision loss... but early detection and proper care make a difference.

Diabetic retinopathy – Early screening prevents blindness; nearly 60% of Canadians with Type 2 diabetes develop DR within 20 years.

Other chronic conditions – Stroke, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis can affect vision, coordination, and daily independence.

Low vision support – Rehabilitation services, assistive technologies, and home adaptations help maintain independence and quality of life.

Protect your sight by staying informed, attending regular eye exams, and accessing support when needed.

As we age, natural changes and diseases can affect vision. Understanding them helps protect your sight:

Cataracts – Cloudy lens, blurred vision. Diet rich in antioxidants, UV protection, quitting smoking, and managing chronic conditions can slow progression.

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) – Central vision loss, dry or wet forms. Supplements, healthy diet, exercise, and limiting UV exposure can reduce risk.

Glaucoma – Often symptomless early, optic nerve damage from high eye pressure. Regular exams and healthy habits are key.

Diabetic Retinopathy – High blood sugar damages retinal blood vessels, leading to vision loss. Proper diabetes management is essential.

Healthy habits and regular ophthalmologist visits help maintain vision as you age.

Full story:

As we age, our eyes go through natural changes and in some cases, age-related diseases that can affect quality of life. Understanding and managing these changes is vital to long-term vision health.
