If you're in Canada without status or you're planning to make a refugee claim… this could change your life.
A new bill has just been introduced and it could make it nearly impossible for many to claim asylum in Canada. If you think you have time think again.
It’s called the Strong Borders Act, and today I’m breaking down exactly what it means, why it matters, and how it could affect you or someone you know. Because waiting too long could cost you everything.
The Strong Borders Act is being sold as a bill to stop organized crime and illegal entry across the US–Canada border. But beneath the surface, it could shut the door on thousands of vulnerable people seeking protection.
Here’s what’s changing if the bill passes:
The 12-Month Rule:
If you’ve been in Canada for more than one year without making a refugee claim you may be barred from doing so permanently.
Many are waiting for the right time. Others don’t even know the time limit exists. This bill would cut off their chance, possibly forever.
14-Day Border Rule:
Entering Canada through the U.S.? You’ll now have only 14 days to submit a refugee claim or face automatic rejection under the Safe Third Country Agreement.
The government could suspend immigration and refugee processing altogether for reasons like public health or national security.
Even those facing immediate danger in their home country could be stuck waiting… or worse, sent back.
Surveillance and Financial Restrictions:
The bill would give officials more power to inspect personal mail, and place restrictions on large cash transfers, targeting vulnerable newcomers who rely on friends or communities for help.
This isn’t just policy. These are people’s lives families, children, students, workers who came here looking for safety and a fresh start. If this bill passes, thousands could be disqualified overnight… and face removal from Canada.
But there’s still time. The Strong Borders Act is not law yet. It’s still in Parliament, and it could take months to pass or even be changed with enough pressure and awareness.
If you're in Canada without status, or you plan to claim asylum don’t wait. Talk to a licensed immigration lawyer. Know your deadlines. Prepare your documents. Protect yourself and your family.
Information is power and you just took the first step by seeing this.
