Gordon Lightfoot performs “Summertime Dream” during his Saturday Night Live debut in 1976 🇨🇦🍁

Backed by his full touring band, Gordon Lightfoot made his Saturday Night Live debut during the show’s first season on May 21, 1976, performing two songs.

The show’s host, Buck Henry, would promptly welcome Lightfoot to the stage as “something fantastic from Canada” before Lightfoot launched into “Summertime Dream,” the title track from his upcoming album, which was released the following month in June 1976.

As for the album, Summertime Dream was Lightfoot’s 12th studio album and went on to become one of his most commercially successful releases, reaching No. 1 in his native Canada and No. 12 on the Billboard 200. The album spawned two highly successful singles, “Summertime Dream” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

Lightfoot also performed “Spanish Moss” during his appearance before returning later in the show for a hilarious mock skit, where he began performing “Sundown” before John Belushi famously cut the strings off his guitar

• Gordon Lightfoot wasn’t the first Canadian musical guest on Saturday Night Live, it was Anne Murray

• Despite Lightfoot’s enormous international success, this would remain his only appearance on Saturday Night Live.

• Lightfoot’s appearance came during the show’s 21st episode, broadcast on May 21, 1976.

Age of Electric taking you back to 1997 with the music video for “Remote Control” 🇨🇦 🍁

Forming in Saskatchewan in the late 1980’s, the group consisted of 2 sets of brothers, Ryan and Kurt Dahle from Regina, and Todd and John Kerns from Lanigan. Between 1991 and 1997 the group would release 3 full length studio albums, with 1997,s “Make a pest a pet” reaching gold status and spawning the rock radio hit “Remote Control”

Following their initial split in 1998, drummer Kurt Dahle would have a 14 year stretch as drummer of “The new Pornographers. Lead vocalist Todd Kerns would join Slash on bass guitar as a member of his solo band “The conspirators.”

• The group briefly reformed for a run of shows between 2015 and 2017.

• “Remote Control” was included on the 1997 Compilation album “Big shiny tunes 2” which is still listed among the top 5 best selling albums in Canada

• Todd Kerns is also credited for providing background vocals on The Matthew Good band albums “Underdogs” and “Beautiful midnight”

Something about The Tragically Hip and long weekends just got hand in hand 🇨🇦 🍁

The Tragically Hip perform “Ahead By a Century” live on 2 Meter, a Dutch program focused on allowing artists to perform televised in a acoustic setting

The Hips 1997 2 Meter session included performances of “Gift Shop” “Long time Running” “Scared” and of course “Ahead by a Century” among others

Released a year prior on the groups fifth studio album titled “Trouble at the henhouse”, the albums lead single “Ahead by a Century” has taken on a life of its own in Canadian Culture, loved by Canadians from Coast to Coast

• The Tragically Hip would develop a massive following in the Netherlands, becoming their largest market outside of their native Canada and certain parts of the The United States

• “Trouble at the Henhouse” Won the group the Juno award for “album of the year”

• “Ahead By a Century” was the final song performed by the Tragically Hip during their final performance in 2016

Platinum Blonde taking you back to 1984 with “Not in love” live from the Juno Awards that year 🇨🇦 🍁

Were you a fan of the Toronto based Glam rock/new wave group? Did you get to see them in their prime, if so what are your Platinum Blonde Stories?!

Forming in Toronto in 1979 by English singer Mark Holmes. While Initially performing glam rock and punk covers, a 1982 local want ad placed by Holmes in the paper brought Drummer Chris Steffler and guitarist Sergio Galli to the attention of the then 19 year old Holmes… Thus cementing the original Platinum Blonde lineup

Released in January of ‘84 the groups debut would go an astonishing triple platinum in Canada spending 43 weeks on the charts. Making the group one of the hottest acts in Canada at the time.

“Not in love” dates back to the groups 1983 E.P, then re-released on “Standing in the dark” months later where is was featured as the albums third single.

• Mark Holmes was actually a hairdressers apprentice before his career in music

• By 1985 the group was the second best performing group in Canada, beat out only by RUSH… funny enough Alex Lifeson would appear on the groups ‘85 follow up “Alien Shores”

• During the groups early days they would perform covers by Marc Bolan, T-Rex, and The Police

You’ve never truly experienced “Tom Sawyer” if you have an air drummed along to it🥁🇨🇦🍁

A monumental release in the group’s career, the electric and unmistakable intro to “Tom Sawyer” propelled Rush headlong into the 1980s. Bassist and vocalist Geddy Lee has since described the song as “the group’s defining piece of work from the early ’80s.”

Featured as the opening track on Rush’s iconic Moving Pictures album, it was certified platinum less than two months after the album’s release, exceeding sales of one million units and becoming the fastest-selling album of the group’s career at the time.

“Tom Sawyer” is also one of the few Rush songs to feature a collaboration with an outside songwriter. The lyrics were co-written by Pye Dubois, best known for his work with Max Webster and Kim Mitchell.

• “Tom Sawyer” is regarded as the world’s greatest Air drumming song of all time by drumeo

• The group wrote the song while vacationing at Ronnie Hawkins farmhouse near Mississauga, Ontario

• Dubois would later collaborate with the RUSH on the “Hold your fire”, “Counterparts”, and “Test for echo” albums

Mike Myers along with his friend Fred and brother Paul drop by the the Speakers Corner both while back in Toronto

The iconic Speakers Corner booth came to life as a weekly segment on CityTV and became hugely popular throughout the 1990s, giving Torontonians the chance to voice their opinions on local news and current events for just $1.

Occasionally, some celebrities would stop by the booth to say hey to the Greater Toronto Area including Mike Myers, Madonna, Harrison Ford and Will Farrell and famously The Ba*****ed Ladies
