Quidi Vidi Brewery was founded in 1996 by David Fong and David Rees, making it the first independent brewery to open in Newfoundland and Labrador since 1962. It is situated directly in the historic fishing village of Quidi Vidi, an iconic neighborhood on the eastern outskirts of St. John's. The founders built the operation by converting a former fish plant that had closed following the collapse of the cod fishery in the early 1990s. Over the decades, it has grown to become the largest craft brewery in the province.

The facility functions as a major destination for both locals and tourists, featuring a prominent oceanfront taproom that overlooks the narrow harbor entrance known as "The Gut." Guests visit the venue for fresh draft pours, live music, and regular tours of the brewing facility, which remains deeply connected to the cultural and social landscape of the city.

Have you ever hiked Sugarloaf Path in Quidi Vidi? ⬇️

One of the most iconic hiking trails in Newfoundland & Labrador 🇨🇦 The Sugarloaf Path is a rugged, scenic section of the East Coast Trail that spans 8.8 kilometres one way between the historic fishing community of Quidi Vidi Village and Logy Bay. It is traditionally rated as a moderate to difficult wilderness hike, taking anywhere from 3 to 5 hours to complete due to the lumpy terrain, steep stairs, and two major elevation changes of 150 metres.

Starting from the Quidi Vidi trailhead, hikers immediately tackle a strenuous ascent up Bawdens Highlands, which rewards the effort with a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of the harbour and the city of St. John’s. The singletrack trail then winds north along the dramatic coastline, passing deep gulches, woodland pockets, and an old World War II observation station built into the cliffside. High points along the path, like Sugarloaf Head, serve as incredible vantage points for catching sight of breaching whales in the summer or seasonal icebergs drifting past the Avalon Peninsula in the spring.

Because the trail features uneven terrain, exposed rock outcrops, and plenty of sharp drops, sturdy hiking boots with solid traction are highly recommended. While the middle section near the White Hills traces close to the local landfill—meaning you might spot some wind-blown debris on breezy days—the exceptional Atlantic ocean views and wild coastal meadows like The Skerries more than make up for it. After navigating the river crossing at Bobbies Cove and finishing the trek at the Ocean Sciences Centre in Logy Bay, many hikers catch a local Metrobus or taxi back to Quidi Vidi to celebrate with a cold drink in the village.

The oldest known graveyard in St. John’s 🤯

This is the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John's Newfoundland & Labrador. 🇨🇦

The Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is a National Historic Site of Canada and stands as one of the most significant examples of ecclesiastical Gothic Revival architecture in North America.

🔨 Architectural Highlights
The striking exterior is built from local Signal Hill sandstone, trimmed with grey granite hauled from Gander Bay!

Step inside to see an intricate open-timber roof crafted by local shipwrights from Newfoundland spruce and pine, beautifully designed to mimic the inverted hull of a ship. Look a little closer and you'll find approximately 170 distinct stone carvings and gargoyles scattered throughout the building. While the exterior creatures are traditional, fierce monsters meant to ward off evil spirits, the interior carvings hidden within the nave actually depict the faces of prominent 19th-century British politicians and aristocrats who were in power when construction started.

🔥The Great Fire of 1892
Tragedy struck during the Great Fire of 1892 when the cathedral was completely gutted, leaving only its stone shell standing. It took over a decade of meticulous rebuilding to restore this masterpiece to its original design.

🪦 The Graveyard
It is virtually impossible to know exactly how many people are buried in this historic churchyard, with graves dating all the way back to 1699. Because space on the rocky hillside was so limited, bodies were frequently buried right on top of older graves over the centuries, leading some historians to estimate that over 20,000 people are interred on these grounds.

📸 The Ghostly Mason Photo
In the small cathedral museum, there is a famous archival photograph taken around 1850. It shows the local stone masons dressed in their "Sunday best" celebrating the completion of the church nave. According to local lore, one of the masons had tragically fallen to his death during construction a short time prior—yet a faint, unexplained extra figure matching his likeness appears standing among the men in the final photograph.

This is “The Rooms” in St. John’s, Newfoundland. 📸

The Rooms is Newfoundland and Labrador's largest public cultural facility, located in downtown St. John's. Opened in 2005, the building prominently sits on a hill overlooking the city and the harbour at the historic site of Fort Townshend.

It serves as a unified cultural hub by housing three previously separate provincial institutions:

- The Provincial Museum: Showcases the natural and cultural history of the province, featuring artifacts spanning over 10,000 years, including deep collections on Indigenous peoples (Innu, Inuit, Mi'kmaq, and Beothuk) and the province's migratory and residential fisheries.

- The Provincial Art Gallery: The premier public art gallery in the province, focusing heavily on contemporary Canadian art with a dedicated emphasis on Newfoundland and Labrador artists.

- The Provincial Archives: Preserves significant historical documents, government records, photographs, and private papers detailing the province's history.

The building's distinctive architecture—with its massive, peaked red roofs—and its name are a direct tribute to traditional "fishing rooms." Historically, these were the gable-roofed sheds, stages, and stores at the waterline where outport families processed their fish and stored their gear.

The building features a large glass atrium that offers panoramic views of the St. John's Harbour, the Narrows, and Signal Hill.
