I’m incredibly proud to have worked on my 11th annual report for the Hamilton Community Foundation. This year, developing the theme felt almost effortless because the Foundation’s direction is so clear and grounded.

With Rudi Wallace now at the helm as CEO, his values are distinct and his leadership resonates throughout the entire organization. He doesn’t just say what’s important. He leads by example, and everyone feels it. The Foundation knows exactly where it stands on the issues that matter most, and it is not afraid to stand firm.

It is a promise to the land, to the people, to the community, to all of Hamilton. HERE. WHERE WE STAND. is not just a clear message of unwavering values. It is a call to stand with them, firm in your beliefs and confident that you have people to back you.

The resulting report is more than numbers and milestones. It is a reflection of purpose, conviction, and the strength of a community foundation that leads with values. I have never been prouder to be associated with them. They stand where I stand. We stand together.

Did Casey from Mr. Dressup have a gender? If you grew up watching, you probably remember Casey, the curious little puppet. But Casey wasn’t a boy or a girl. Puppeteer Judith Lawrence created Casey to be androgynous so every child could see themselves in the character. That choice was radical for kids’ TV at the time, and it quietly challenged the gender boxes we were all handed.

For me, though, it wasn’t just Casey. It was Beverly Glenn-Copeland. I didn’t know why as a kid, but I felt connected to him. Beverly was different in a way I couldn’t name yet, and that connection stayed with me. He spent over 25 years on the show before stepping away to focus on music, and much later he came out as a trans man. When I learned that, I felt pure joy. Suddenly my childhood memories made sense. Mr. Dressup had given me glimpses of belonging long before I had the words.

The truth is, those glimpses were all I had. A gender-neutral puppet. A musician who wouldn’t come out for decades. There were no q***r kids’ characters. No trans role models. If you weren’t straight and cis, you had to find yourself between the lines. And that’s why representation matters. It’s not about tokenism. It’s about kids being able to say, “That’s me.”

Mr. Dressup did it without speeches or slogans. It just let kids be. And that’s why watching the documentary Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe hit me so hard. It captured what made the show magical. Kindness, creativity, and quiet representation.

For a long time, a puppet without a gender and a future trans musician were all the representation I had. And for a long time, that had to be enough. The question is, why are we still asking q***r kids to settle for “just enough”?
