Customer sent in a MicroMV (2001-2006) tape that has snapped. Here’s how small a MicroMV reel and tape is next to a 3-inch 8mm film reel (film, not video tape). Also look at the miniaturization of the inside of the tape. Got it fixed and transferred for the customer.

I’ve been down for a while with this, but I’m happy to announce that I can, once again, transfer D-VHS tapes. At least the NTSC D-VHS tapes.

D-VHS was first released in the US in 1996 in conjunction with Dish Network, where people could get a D-VHS VCR and Satellite box in one, for recording standard definition broadcasts in all their digital glory. The top recording speed as called Standard or “STD” and on a standard ST-120 S-VHS tape (aka as a DF-240 if sold under the D-VHS moniker) people could record 4 hours of 480i or 480p material. Some VCR’s could also use an alternate record speed, called LS5, and record 20 hours of 480i material on a ST-120/DF-240. And at 14.1 Mbps in STD, the tapes provided a better image than even DVD!

Then in 2002 JVC brought out the 1080i/720p HD version of D-VHS. D-VHS VCRs could play this HD material over firewire, and later VCRs, such as the Japanese Victor (JVC) HM-DX2 (which is what I’ll be using for all D-VHS transfers) even had HDMI output!
