First leg of our road trip to CO. Pender Island to Vancouver Island.

Every journey starts the same way: prop spinning, lines cast off.

We made it to safety yesterday on our crossing over to Pender Island. Western Grebe performed perfectly. A 2.5 hour power-sail in rough seas and 27 knot winds. The gimble stove got a workout as I briefly contemplated coffee service. Nope. 👎

A harbour seal hunting in the shallows this morning… wild to watch how precise and patient they are. Life around the marina never stops teaching.

Beginning January. “A Year on the Edge of the Pacific” follows John and Mary as they rebuild their lives together aboard a small wooden sailboat on Canada’s rugged west coast. They’re taking a reset at a time when most people are coasting toward the finish line—choosing to rebuild, not wind down.

One year. Twelve episodes. Storms, quiet anchorages, repairs, growth, and a new beginning.

A simple, cinematic portrait of life close to the elements.

A new series on YouTube. Link in the bio. Subscribe so you don’t miss an episode!

The first time sailing W. Grebe in this week’s video. All of these “firsts” are adding up quickly. We also have a nearly disastrous near-miss while docking. Lessons learned.

Late fall on the west coast of Canada. Haunting light, short days. West coast vibes. Follow for more ocean, less chaos.

Things get tough. Only then are we faced with decisions that forever change our paths. I’ve learned to love tough times, not for how hard they are, but for the gifts they always provide us. Every single time.

The last couple of times that I’ve tried docking W. Grebe have been difficult. Controlling her is hard enough, but these currents on this dock! Love it…great practice for getting better at helmsmanship. 👊
