What a night!

I am grateful for having the opportunity to capture this Common Poorwill on camera last night. This Western species of nightjar is so hard to find in Canada and even tougher to photograph. The gap road in Cypress Hills Provincial Park in SW Saskatchewan is the best place to try.

My adapter worked brilliantly at night. Video taken with my iPhone.

Why do the rare birds always show up in the bad weather?

I’m thankful for gear that works in the rain.

Bats 🦇

I get asked if Bats are birds. Nope!

Going to a bat cave at dusk is super fun for a birder because guess who also knows about the bat cave? Hawks!

We had a memorable time at my Texas Birding Retreat watching Swainson’s Hawks and Red-tailed Hawks swooping in and getting their nightly bat snacks!

Comment PELEE below and I’ll send you the details for my free live webinar this Friday — Spring Migration Birding Readiness Refresher. 60 minutes of everything you need to know before migration hits, plus a live Q&A. Free, on Zoom, April 10th at 4pm ET.

A lot of birders hold off on Point Pelee because they feel like they’re “not ready yet.” I’d argue the opposite — May at the Tip is one of the best places on the continent to get good, fast, because the birds make it easy and the learning compounds every hour you’re out there.
