Any day a new arrival is a good day.

We are delighted to announce the release of “A New Light of Alchemy” by Michael Sendivogius, featuring a new scholarly introduction by Rafal T. Prinke.

Long regarded as the most influential alchemical work of the early modern period, Novum Lumen Chymicum presented one of the most coherent and compelling systems of alchemical philosophy ever written. Published in more than sixty editions before 1800, it inspired generations of chymists through its celebrated Salt-Nitre theory and its quest for the mysterious “Water that wets not the hands.”

This edition restores the legacy of Michael Sendivogius, the enigmatic Polish adept whose authorship of the work was long obscured by centuries of misattribution. Alongside the four classic treatises, the volume includes two important appendices, including the first English translation of the famed Processus Universalis.

Limited to 700 hand-numbered copies, this beautiful edition is handbound in amber-coloured reconstituted leather, stamped in gold, and printed in duotone on Munken Pure Rough paper. It features thirteen illustrations, coloured endpapers, head and tail bands, and a silk ribbon marker.

Available now on Anathema Publishing’s website.

A Review of The Hanged God by Lagrillon Debast

Shani’s book The Hanged God streams from the old roots of time in a culture so misinterpreted along history from past to present. Ranging from a unique point of view, Shani gives her insight both as a living crafter of northern traditions and as an academic researcher into the warrior and war band cultures of Germanic, Scandinavian and Britain’s mythologies and folklore.

Seeking to shed some new lights in the common view, as usual, the author pushes boundaries previously established by public opinion rather than actual research and one of these is the idea that Óðinn may not have been so popular as today we might think, rather his cult was surrounded by forbidden and obscure practices of outlawry and by warrior groups formed by actual or fictive kinship, united under oath bound allegiances to the image of their chieftain.

Exploring the mystical elixir that drops from the sorcerous and poetic texts of the Hávamál, the book invites us into themes such as rites and rituals of life, death, trance and journeys into the wildness that although hailed by many these days are rarely realized outside of comfortable walls and bookshelves.

The realms of prophecy, of the Seidr and of the Volva and of authority are wonderfully stressed in a part of the book that explores the image of Idunna as both a Dís (a divine ancestress) and as the Goddess of Fate “who fixes the lifespan of mortals, and the gods too through her golden elixir”. Linking this Goddess with the totemic representation of the Wolf, the author reveals her titanic forces present in Ragnarok as a way of regeneration of a new world for both man and the gods.

The importance of the Axis Mundi, the transcendence climbing and the embodiment of the same by mythological and heroic figures through ordeal is a recurrent idea that explores the different and possible modalities of sacrifice pertaining to the realm of Óðinn and his followers. Animal forms of fetch or fylgja and of shamanic travels, from Finn-Ugaric to South American, hangs in our mind as we feel ourselves to be suspended by the timeless reality that the author so gently pushes us into.

However, once we have entered this ancestral place of memories and shades, the author presents us with songs of old that invokes in our minds by the tongues of poets, necromancers and visionaries, the figures such as the Draugar (the living dead) and the Haugbúar (mound-dwellers). The engagement with the útisetta or the meditational practice around burial mounds and sacred places are stressed as a traditional way of approaching and consulting the souls of ancestors shades until the church banned it.

Poetic verses translated and offered both by other academics and the author herself (truly, this is an enormous task) shows us the myriad of interpretations that have grown in our mind what pertains to northern culture.

Physically, the book is impeccable. Lastly, but not least, I should mention that the appendix is incredibly woven around the whole idea, providing further grounds of research to the reader. I would also recommend to check the long list of references at the end, there are very interesting researches that back up Shani’s controversial theories and perspectives upon the cult of the Hanged God and the ‘Windy Tree.’

"The Hanged God: Óðinn Grímnir" by Shani Oates uncovers rare insights into the Northern tradition, offering a deep dive into forgotten rituals and wisdom. Unlike typical works, it presents an in-depth, multi-disciplinary approach to Óðinn’s sagas, challenging mainstream interpretations. Fu

PATCH SHIPPING COSTS JUST DROPPED: A quick supplementary note regarding the recently announced Anathema Publishing Embroidered Patch...

We’ve just added a Flat Letter shipping option (non-tracked) for most destinations on items that can safely travel via regular stamped mail and weigh under 0.09 kg.

In practical terms, this means that if you’re only looking to order one, two, or perhaps three patches, shipping should now be significantly less expensive than before.

Of course, this option does not include tracking, but for small, lightweight items such as these patches, it seemed a sensible alternative to offer.

Cheers!

Any amount can help... Support for my cousin and her partner going through a life-changing tragedy.

(Here's a local TV segment about it in which Éliane expresses herself a bit; alas it is only in French.)

Dear Readers and Supporters, Gabriel speaking here. It is with a truly heavy heart that I write today to share a tragedy affecting someone very close to me: my cousin Karl, and his partner Éliane, who are currently living through what can only be described as a nightmare.

Some longtime followers of Anathema may remember Karl already. Him and I once operated together under the musical project LIM, and he composed several dark ambient and ritual pieces for Anathema’s earliest releases, including music featured in the first three issues of PILLARS. Some of these can still freely be heard here: anathemapublishing.bandcamp.com

Last Thursday evening, Éliane’s home was entirely destroyed in a violent fire. In only a few minutes, everything was gone.

The house itself is a total loss, alongside vehicles, personal belongings, beloved animals, and much of Éliane’s farming equipment, tools, seeds, and seedlings intended for this growing season. Anyone who knows Éliane knows how much heart and devotion she pours into her ecological farm, “Si c’pas ça la vie.” This was not merely a business, but a life patiently built over many years.

Thankfully, immediate support is being provided through the Red Cross, alongside friends, family, and neighbours. But the road ahead will be long and difficult.

And so today, I am not writing to announce a new title or launch another Kickstarter, but simply to ask, humbly, for help.

A fundraising campaign has been organized to help them slowly rebuild and recover. Every donation, share, and kind word truly matters.

We fully understand not everyone is in a position to contribute, nor should anyone feel obligated. But if you can help, even something as small as 5$ genuinely makes a difference.

Thank you deeply for taking the time to read this and consider helping.

Dear Readers and Supporters,
Gabriel speaking here.
