Hallowe'en is 11 days away and, between the candy and the costumes, the spookiest of nights can get just a tiny bit expensive.

It doesn't always *have* to, though. Subbing out store-bought costumes for outfits you can throw together at a thrift store, or from your own closet! You'd be surprised how many characters, from pirates, to secret agents, to even an X-man or two, can be created with everyday clothing.

What sorts of costumes could you throw together from the stuff in your closet? Throw some ideas into the comments, or call/text 250-723-0933! And, if you've got some photo evidence of your closet costumes, feel free to share! 👻 🧙‍♀️ 🎃 ~Tom

Bamfield Main Road will reopen Oct. 24 with daily closures for a week

BAMFIELD - Removal of hazardous trees along Bamfield Main Road is ongoing as part of recovery efforts following a recent wildfire.

Work was suspended over the past weekend due to heavy rainfall and has since resumed. Further weather-related delays are anticipated.

Heavy rain is forecast for Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, which may pause operations again. The most significant rainfall since the wildfire is expected Wednesday, Oct. 22, with 50 to 75 millimetres of rain in the forecast. This will result in a full suspension of work and allow Ministry of Transportation and Transit staff to monitor slope stability in line with the reopening protocol for fire-impacted areas.

As a result, removal of hazardous trees is expected to extend beyond Friday, Oct. 24, which will also delay utility work in the area.

As planned, traffic will be permitted through the site on the morning of Friday, Oct. 24, and the road will remain open through the weekend. However, daily closures will be in effect beginning Monday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., to allow crews to complete the tree removal, which is anticipated to take about one week.

By the time the road reopens on Oct. 24, the ministry will have removed the highest-risk trees. Patrols will continue to monitor the slope and respond to any changes.

Utility work will require some full closures and, whenever possible, single-lane alternating traffic will be implemented to minimize the impact to traffic.

All planned closures and updates will be posted online: https://drivebc.ca

8:00am: There is a semi truck that has rolled into the ditch near the westbound passing lanes close to Cameron Lake on Highway 4.

Emergency crews are on site, and traffic has been taken down to single lanes both west and eastbound. Drive safely, and give the crews room to work. ~Tom

I may be on earlier than usual this week, but it is still Friday, which means we are still talking about movies!!

As we're two weeks away from Hallowe'en, today I'd love to hear about a film that genuinely scared the ever-loving daylights out of you. I mean "watch it with the lights on, then watch something funny afterwards," levels of scary.

Leave your reviews down in the comments, or call/text 250-723-0933! 🎬 👻 🍿 ~Tom

Let's face it, chores are not inherently fun. Time spent cleaning bathrooms, doing dishes or making beds could easily be spent on something more enjoyable! Reading, hiking, listening to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs game this morning at 10 (pregame at 9:45am), etc.

It's enough to make you wish that you could just get someone else to do the work for you, right?

If you could hire someone to take care of one specific chore for the rest of your life, which chore would it be?

It's Tom in the morning again, with a nice, easygoing question to start your day: Is there such a thing as being "too old" for Hallowe'en?

I've always been of the opinion that growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional. I fully intend to keep dressing up in funny costumes and gorging on candy on the 31st for as long as I'm physically able to! But, I also understand that such things are not everyone's cup of tea.

How about you? Are you indulging in the childish whimsy of Hallowe'en this year? Or do you feel like you've grown out of it?

Good morning! Evan's out on the Mainland with your Alberni Valley Bulldogs for the showcase series this week, so you get Tom in the AM!

I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving long weekend, full of family, friends and food!

To keep things nice and simple this morning, I'd love to know what you're thankful for this year! Whether it's something to do with your family/personal life, your work, the fact that the Jays still have a shot at the World Series (nominally), etc.

Let me know down in the comments, or call/text 250-723-0933 😁 ~Tom

Happy Friday, AND Happy Thanksgiving! However your 3 day weekend is looking, I hope it's safe, and fun, and chalk full of family, friends and love.

In that vein, we're doing a family-focused Movie Night Friday this week! What are your favourite films to watch with your loved ones? Maybe they're old favourites that your parents shared with you, flicks you took your kids out to when they were younger. Maybe they're just really good shows that now have a special place in your family's collective hearts!

Either way, I'd love to know! Leave your reviews in the comments, or call/text 250-723-0933! Your film could wind up in the show as one of our patented Port Picks! 🎬 📽 🍿 ~Tom
