Aurora and lightning over Southern Manitoba tonight

A special weather statement has been issued for Southwest Manitoba and Southeast Saskatchewan.

Conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds.

Locations: Portions of southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba.

Time span: until this evening.

Remarks: An unstable air mass may lead to the development of isolated funnel clouds.

These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued by Environment Canada.

Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous. They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.

Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.

Did you know that just 5 hrs NW of Winnipeg, MB lies this Beautiful hidden gem of Little Limestone Lake?

It is the largest marl lake in the world and gets its beautiful tropical blue waters from the high concentration of calcite due to its limestone bottom. When it warms this calcite separates into tiny crystals that suspend in the water. These crystals then reflect sunlight, scattering blue and turquoise light and giving the lake its vibrant color, similar to Caribbean waters. As the water cools, the calcite dissolves, causing the lake to become clearer.

UPDATE: Portage la Prairie RCMP search for missing youth

The 13-year-old female from Portage la Prairie, who was reported missing to RCMP on August 23, 2025, has been safely located.

The RCMP thanks the public for their assistance

MISSING: Faith Straight, 13-year-old, was last seen on August 21. 2025, at approximately 3 am, at her residence in Portage la Prairie.

The RCMP are concerned for her safety.

Faith Straight is approximately 5’2”, thin, with brown eyes and long brown hair. She was last seen wearing a white sweater and jean shorts with black, red and blue Jordan high tops shoes.

Check out the rapid development of this HUGE severe thunderstorm complex that is affecting much of southern Manitoba tonight with Heavy rains, tons of lightning, and some hail.

At 9:40 pm it was nothing, and now at midnight it spans around 330 km long.

This funnel cloud/possible landspout tornado was captured a few miles Southwest of La Rivière on Saturday August 9th, around 6:45 pm.
