Jeff Skoll, a Silicon Valley billionaire and a longtime friend of Elon Musk’s, said there was “an awful lot of pressure” to side with Mr. Trump.

This month, Mr. Skoll, who has donated tens of millions to Democratic candidates and causes in recent years but said he did not vote in the 2024 presidential election, posted a photo on social media of himself standing with Mr. Trump backstage at the inauguration. On Friday, he had breakfast in Palm Beach, Fla., with Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the minority leader, where they discussed the prospect of Mr. Schumer’s using Mr. Skoll to back-channel ideas to the president, Mr. Skoll said.

This year marks 25 years of the Skoll Foundation investing in, connecting, and championing social entrepreneurs and innovators who have generated solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Power philanthropist Skoll Skoll, who served as eBay’s first president from 1996 to 1998, ended up realizing his pro hockey ambitions two years ago, when he became a part owner of the company that owns the Washington Capitals NHL team.

Now, Skoll is paying $17 million for a compound in McLean, Va., to be closer to the Washington, D.C., stadium where the Capitals play.

“I decided it would be great to have a home in the area so I could be there more often,” said Skoll, 59, who lives primarily in Florida.

In the 2024 Gates Foundation Annual Letter released on January 25th, CEO Mark Suzman points to this moment as demanding more urgency, more resources, and bolder new ideas. “While money is only part of the equation, it’s critical,” he wrote in an op-ed in Forbes published the same day.

Celebrating billionaire philanthropist, Chuck Feeney, who gave away all his wealth during his lifetime, Suzman said, “He showed us all how the actions of one generous person can set the wheels in motion for generations of progress.”

The Gates Foundation has committed to increasing its annual payout to $9 billion by 2026. And, writes Suzman, “other philanthropists are stepping up too,” sharing why that makes him so hopeful about how much more can be achieved together.
