In this Volume 2 Issue 1 of the , we delve into a state-of-the-art review article presented by Marine Sallé and colleagues from Nantes University, France, Padua University, Italy, and Tel Aviv University, Israel, on the pathophysiology of structural bioprosthetic valve degeneration. This review underscores the urgent need for continued research to improve the longevity of bioprosthetic valves, which is increasingly vital as their use expands, especially among younger patients with longer life expectancies.

In the Volume 2 Issue 1 of the , Mohammad Torky and colleagues from Tanta University Faculty of Medicine, Egypt, and KU Leuven, Belgium, report the results of a retrospective analysis in which they compared 95 patients with an average age of 56 y.o. receiving an Inspiris bioprosthetic valve with 69 patients receiving a bileaflet mechanical valve. The conclusion is that the Inspiris Resilia bioprosthetic valve could be a good alternative to the mechanical valves for aortic valve replacement in the younger population.

In the Volume 2 Issue 1 of the , Marie Lamberigts and colleagues, present a study of sutureless AVR conducted over a 15-year period at KU Leuven in Leuven, and University Hospital of Liège in Belgium that included 1,136 patients. This original research, provides critical insights into the long-term performance and durability of the Perceval sutureless bioprosthetic valve. This extensive 15-year series reaffirms the efficacy and safety of sutureless AVR, providing a robust surgical option alongside TAVR.

This retrospective single-center analysis, published in the Volume 2 Issue 1 of the , conducted by Laith Allaham and colleagues from the Albasheer Hospital, Jordan, examined 200 patients who underwent surgical AVR. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of titanium fasteners versus traditional hand-tied knots in securing prosthetic valve sutures. This research supports the growing body of evidence favoring TFs in heart valve surgery for better efficiency and fewer complications.

In this Volume 2 Issue 1 of the JHVS, Brennan Vogl and colleagues, Universita degli Studi di Milano, Italy, report the results of a retrospective analysis comparing 52 patients who underwent TAVR and compared the anatomical characteristics of the aortic arch in 26 patients who had stroke following TAVR versus 26 patients who did not. The investigators found that aortic arch cross-sectional area ratio (cerebral ostia cross-sectional areas / arch cross-sectional area) and bovine arch configuration were the most significant correlates of stroke after TAVR.

In this Volume 2 Issue 1 of the , Mariah McMahon and colleagues from the University of Minnesota, USA, report the long-term in vivo performance of an allogenic, decellularized bioengineered tissue valve in the juvenile sheep model. This research marks an important step forward in heart valve engineering, addressing critical challenges such as tissue calcification and durability.

In the Volume 2 Issue 1 of the , Tom Langenaeken and colleagues from the University Hospitals in Leuven, Belgium, showed that for research in mechanical valve thrombosis, pigs offer a better model due to their closer physiological resemblance to humans in terms of coagulation. This study paves the way for more reliable and translational results in future research on heart valve disease.
