19 years ago yesterday, the larger than life wrestler and Newfoundland’s own Sailor White passed away. He would be happy to know how often people still talk about him, I bet.

19 years ago today Sailor White, who also wrestled as Moondog King, passed away at the age of 56.

As Moondog King, he captured the WWF Tag Team Championship with Moondog Rex. During their reign, White, a Canadian citizen, was denied re-entry into the U.S. and was replaced by Moondog Spot. On TV, Gorilla Monsoon famously explained that King had been struck by a car.

White retired in 1986, later driving a taxi and even running for the Canadian House of Commons under the slogan “Parliament Needs a Moondog.”

In December 2004, his taxi crashed, leaving him hospitalized until his passing on August 26.
