What will you be remembered for when you retire?

Will people keep begging you to come out of retirement to keep doing what you were doing?

Siu To came to Edmonton in 1975. He built a successful restaurant called Happy Garden. One dish stood out on his menu- Green Onion Cake.

When he retired, people kept asking for more of his famous Green Onion Cake. As a man who likes people, and even likes them more when he feeds them. Five years ago he started the Green Onion Cake Man restaurant on the Alberta Avenue area of Edmonton, keeping to his simple traditional recipe, pan baked every cake, bread-like texture, not too sweet, and not too greasy, a recipe that has gained Siu fans throughout his time in the restaurant industry.

Green onion cakes, are a popular dish with origins in northern China, specifically the Shandong Province. They were made popular in Edmonton by Chef Siu To, who introduced the dish through his restaurant, Happy Garden.
Today, as part of his retirement project, Siu baked us his trade marked Green Onion Cake, at the Green Onion Cake Man restaurant on our Tour, served with chili sauce, and dark vinegar. It was indeed the best experience of Green Onion Cake I’ve ever had and can’t wait to go back to 118 Avenue for more.

After this wonderful pick from Alberta Avenue Business Association, I will continue to the bubbly Edmonton centre to see the city through the eyes of MLA David Shepherd.

See ya…!
________

I can’t leave the north of Edmonton without making a stop at Edmonton’s 2D cafe - the Ark Cafe.

The Ark Cafe joins my list of Cafe Gems of the Edmonton North, with a 2D interior design, hand drawn by the owner’s daughter, thereby bringing an inspiration that the owner got far away in Korea to life right here in Edmonton - amazingly amazing ehh!

The Ark Cafe is celebrated for its beautiful interior and unique decor, offering a variety of delicious food and beverages, including the highly recommended Korean Garlic Buns, one of the items I tried on the menu. With a friendly staff and an inviting atmosphere, it’s an excellent place for cafe lovers looking to enjoy a cozy time with family and friends.

Hope you learned something about Edmonton’s North. Now let’s head towards downtown, making a stop at Alberta Avenue Business Association’s pick, the King of Green Onion Cake.

This is the closest I’ve ever been to heaven - Lake Jasper in the Jasper National Park.

I’ve been on this tour across Alberta just with my team and the involvement of, or still to be involved, the most influential people in Alberta, top organizations, and interesting and captivating places.

This option came up on our team to open up this leg of the tour to Diversity Magazine audience, 50 of you signed up to join Diversity Tour of Alberta, Jasper National Park, Tourcation - congratulations!

If you’re unable to make it tomorrow, get ready for the last tour of Jasper National Park on Saturday, August 16, a full day of experiences that words will not articulate.

What a Night to Remember!

Last night was nothing short of amazing at the MacEwan Ventures Pitch Competition, hosted by Black Canadian Women (BCW) in Action and MacEwan University’s School of Business.

Six brilliant entrepreneurs took the stage, each one sharing powerful, inspiring business ideas that lit up the room. Their passion and innovation were undeniable — and the best part? Every single one of them walked away with $5,000 to help grow their business dreams!

This exciting event was the grand finale of a program created to uplift Black entrepreneurs, giving them the knowledge, tools, and confidence to lead successful ventures.

Throughout the program, participants learned:

– How to manage budgets and cash flow

– How to build strong leadership and teams

– Strategies for developing their businesses

– How to pitch like pros — with real cash prizes on the line!

The room was filled with energy, community, and celebration. It was more than a pitch competition — it was a moment of empowerment, support, and belief in Black innovation.

Thank you to everyone who came out, cheered, and helped make the night so special.

Before concluding the tour at City Hall, we stopped at her favourite ice cream shop - the Village Ice Cream on 10th Avenue, Calgary.

This was a part of the Diversity Tour of Alberta, Calgary leg, through the eyes of Mayor Jyoti Gondek of Calgary.

As an ice creamer, who has tried ice cream in every municipality that has hosted this tour, I can say this ice cream was rich, I’m itchy to add that trying Toasted Coconut ice cream for the first time was like an experience in ice cream folklore.

We finally reached Calgary City Hall, where the mayor summarized her tour, from the ward she represented as a councillor, home to the historic Buffalo Rubbing Stone, through the office where she started her career, Heritage Square, to City Hall, where she’s now Mayor of Calgary, and running for re-election.

It was a fantastic experience sharing her love for Calgary through her favourite places on her journey this far, hosted by Diversity Tour of Alberta, Calgary leg.

Hope you learned something about Calgary today.

See you at the next stop, back in Edmonton and other municipalities to follow with an exciting group tour to Jasper National Park.

Enjoy the beauty and freshness of a garden without leaving the building.

Yes, discover one of Calgary’s largest indoor garden, Mayor Gondek’s second stop in the Tour of Alberta, Calgary leg, at the Heritage Square building.

Located on Macleod Trail with easy access to Heritage Drive and close proximity to Glenmore Trail, the building features one of Calgary’s largest enclosed atriums with an attractive garden, walking distance to Heritage LRT station via a pedestrian bridge.

We climbed upstairs to visit the place where the mayor started her career in Calgary, as well as, one of the tenants of the building, Showpass - Calgary-based ticketing platform at the heart of the city's dynamic event scene, recognized for its innovation in ticketing.

Next stop will be at the Village Ice Cream…
