Layla Bautista will produce "Beginner's Luck": 🎥

Two friends play a game of chess. One is an intermediate and one is a beginner. However, when the game starts to heat up, we get to see the pieces as if they're in real life - showcasing not only the battle of the minds but also a literal one. Who will win? ♟

Layla Bautista is a half Filipina-Canadian born and raised in Saskatoon Saskatchewan, Canada. Layla started her film career at age 18 after she dropped out of University and quit all three of her jobs. She was then given the opportunity to shadow a local filmmaker who showed her into the world of film! From there, she created Bokeh Media. Through Bokeh Media, Layla works as a freelancer on film sets and produces her own shorts and music videos. Layla is always open to learning and exploring new opportunities in order to expand her skill set! 📸

Bautista: "Having 'Beginner's Luck' selected for the RIFFA Launch Pad is a great feeling! As the director, I'm excited to share this story and expand my skill set; but most importantly, I'm also excited to work on a project that will showcase the skills and talents of emerging Saskatchewan artists." 🙌

Coming later this year:

Scraps is a 10 year old Australian Shepherd. From the perspective of his owner, we the audience experience Scrap's diagnosis of terminal cancer and we follow him to the end of his life.

Inspired by writer/director Jared Feuring's real life journey with his dog that was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and given roughly 6 months to live. This is Jared's narrative film directorial debut.

The score was custom made for this short by Saskatchewan artist Stephen Folnovic known for his band

A portion of the budget for this film was donated to Albert North Veterinary's charity fund which goes to aid owners facing operations or pet care outside their budget.

Hey everyone,

This week is RIFFA - Regina International Film Festival and Awards! Please go check out some of the screenings and events if you can. It's the interest of the general public that is going to help events like these grow in our city.

And to sweeten the deal, tomorrow (Thursday) come see Fearless Jared Feuring talk as part of a filmmaker's forum at 1PM at the Central Library location, and then later that night at 9PM our short documentary about Nadean Sanderson is playing with a block of films over at the RCMP Heritage Museum.

So come out. Say "hi". And support the festival!

Awards don't define the product when it comes to film. Very far from it. But it's a nice piece of validation to know that everything Fire Ring has put out for festival submission has received either a festival official selection or win. We're small for now, but we're going to grow and keep improving.
