Dogs have sensitive paws, they have a lot of nerve endings and are able to feel temperature, pressure, irritants like salts. Dogs need nails for traction, the nails are positioned on the very tip of the last bone on each toe. The quick has blood vessels and nerves which needs to be handled delicately during trims. Dewclaws are higher up on the leg used as a thumb, they do not naturally wear down on surfaces. Light nails are easier to see the 'quick', dark nails are a lot more challenging. They usually need to have nail trims every 3 weeks or so. IF a dogs nails are very long, do not cut super short because the quick increases and decreases with nail length. Safety first, only trim a little bit at a time and the nails will gradually go to a normal length. Seek Professional help by a vet or groomer to help trim the nails if you are unsure.
Incorrect nails have a higher chance of developing arthritis, arthritis is when the bones rub against each other without a small space between joints. Pain can create behavior changes, arthritis does not have a cure. It is best to prevent it for as long as possible.
