This episode is a little slower and a little more nostalgic than most — a day surrounded by the wild world, traipsing through creeks under summer sun.

Our current series is about sailing south to Mexico. In order to get there, we have to sail along nearly the entire west coast of Canada, the USA, and the Baja Peninsula before turning up into the Sea of Cortez.

Northern British Columbia produces tough and kind people — and no one fits that description better than Leo Rutherford. During our sailing trip on the BC coast, Leo reached out and invited us to his remote island home, where he makes a living from beachcombing, fishing, and boatbuilding. We eagerly accepted the invite, and soon found ourselves docked next to Leo in the small community of Oona River, where he was preparing his nets for sockeye season.

We’ve had remarkably good luck so far during our voyages along the BC coast. We’ve had very few true misadventures. After years and years of sailing, we’ve gotten better at reading the weather and the tides. We know when to head out and when to stay tucked away. But even still, unexpected things happen, and one night in a remote anchorage, something did. A strong squall passed overhead at 5am, and we found ourselves dragging quickly towards the rocks.

We never would have stopped here if we hadn’t known. The anchorage is poorly protected, suitable only for the calmest of nights. The island is tiny, protruding timidly from the notorious seas of northern British Columbia. But as we approached, the strange and powerful allure of the lighthouse drew us in, and we anchored in a mercifully flat sea. Seabirds circled overhead. We rowed ashore, clambered over rocks, drawn by the lighthouse to the end of the island.

It's here! Our feature length film about sailing nearly the entire west coast of Canada, from Vancouver to Prince Rupert, is now live. For those of you who have been following our journey for the past few years -- this is an entirely new film about an entirely new journey -- there is no overlap with our previous "Northern Voyage" series.

I know that an hour long film can be a hard sell on YouTube, but I hope that it will speak to those of you who feel drawn to it. It's more than just a film about sailing the coast (although there's plenty of that). It's also a film about love for an old boat, for adventure, and for a slow life.

On Friday, the biggest video we’ve ever made goes live. In it, we sail nearly the entire west coast of Canada, from Vancouver to Prince Rupert.

After that, we will be starting a whole new series of videos: ‘South to the Sun,’ in which we sail down the coast all the way to Mexico.
