🇨🇦 Canada’s August job numbers contained one important exception.

Overall employment declined by 42,000 jobs, according to Statistics Canada.

The unemployment rate remained at 6.4%.

But manufacturing employment moved in the opposite direction.

The sector added approximately 22,000 jobs — a 1.2% increase — and was the only industry to record a statistically significant employment increase during the month.

That comes as Canadian manufacturers face tariffs, changing supply chains and growing pressure to bring more production home.

One month does not establish a long-term trend.

But manufacturing stood out clearly in an otherwise weaker national employment report.

After more than a year of trade turmoil, Conservatives are now insisting that Mark Carney owes Canadians an explanation for what derailed a potential trade deal with the Americans last month.

OTTAWA — During Donald Trump’s first term as president, Pierre Poilievre was asked about criticism of the Trudeau government for its plan to retaliate against tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canadian steel and aluminum.

Poilievre was not the one doing the criticizing. Rather, it was the People’s Party of Canada, then a new right-wing political upstart, which had sent out a fundraising email warning that Ottawa’s plan to strike back against the U.S. would only lead to further escalation and higher costs for Canadians.

Critics warn that restricting electricity could hurt ordinary families and businesses, reduce Canadian export revenue and trigger damaging retaliation. They argue that energy should remain a dependable shared resource—not become a political weapon.

Canada has the right to defend itself, but every response must be strategic, lawful and carefully measured.
