14 years ago, we accidentally started a video company. We were just two dudes who wanted to create videos. Silly, dramatic, artsy… We didn’t really care, we just wanted to create something awesome. Neither of us knew much about running a business, nor did we really aspire to be entrepreneurs, but 14 years later… here we are.

It’s been 14 years of passion & creativity, fuelled by a relentless work ethic, a drive to make clients happy & an insatiable desire to craft unique videos.

Along the way, we’ve been trusted by so many incredible clients. From scrappy startups to national brands to not-for-profits.... The trust & collaboration to create videos that reflect all of you has been meaningful. It has been an honour to tell your stories.

MRP wouldn’t be who we are today without our clients.

And even more so, MRP wouldn’t be who we are today without the countless crew & cast we’ve had the joy to work alongside. The friendships forged while creating silly videos mean the world to us.

As much as we’ve gotten used to “this being our job”… When we truly step back and reflect, we see what an amazing & unconventional adventure we’ve found ourselves on.

This is a tip for anyone creating videos with their phone (not just actors with self-tapes!)

Ever watch a video with terrible audio and feel stressed & annoyed? Well, that's how casting feels if your self-tape sounds like you're trapped in a wind tunnel… If you don't have an external mic for your self-tapes or social videos this is your sign to get one...

Audio is one of the easiest upgrades you can make to instantly boost the quality of your self-tapes and you don’t need to break the bank.

There are $30 mics on Amazon that get the job done. But personally, I love using the Neewer CM-28 because it is super user friendly and works great with my phone and DSLR.

And, no, I am not sponsored by Neewer (yet ...), but Neewer… let’s talk. You bring the gear, I’ll bring the charm. I got ideas...

🎬 TIP 3 of 10: Strength Over Script
Ever read a breakdown and think: “This role isn’t me..." and consider just declining? I've been tempted plenty o' times, but I've also surprised myself by booking roles I thought I was wrong for...
Instead of passing on the audition, I’ve learned to lean into my strengths & just let loose (remember Tip #1 - Create a Self-Tape You Love).
Try this next time: Play the closest honest version of the character that still fits in the world they’ve built. You don’t have to be a perfect match. You just have to be an interesting possibility.
This is Tip 3 of 10 in my Self-Tape series I'm hoping will encourage actors to enjoy the auditioning process more and stand out to casting.

🎬 TIP 2 of 10: Keep It Brief

This took me a while to figure out.... Casting directors are watching dozens, if not hundreds of tapes. Don’t make them feel like they’re stuck in a hostage situation.

You may think by saying more get you more screen time, but the best thing you can do is to make the casting director’s job easier. So be fun, pleasant, show ‘em what you got and then get out. If you drag it out, it’ll feel like a drag to watch.. Brevity wins.

Stoked to be a part of the Program Advisory Committee for Niagara College’s Broadcasting - Radio, Film, and Television.

Each program at the college has an advisory committee made up of industry experts to help with program direction with respect to industry trends so the curriculum remains relevant & students get the best education. We’ve been creating for & with for years now, and every chance we get to work with the & students there - they always impress me with their skillset & professionalism.

As a student of life, I’m pretty honoured to be considered “an expert” in anything... Plus film school was such a fulfilling time of my life - it’s nice to give back to future film students (check out the last pic to see a glimpse of our Film school days). So thanks NC & for inviting me to be a part of this.

🎬 TIP 1 of 10: Create a Self-Tape You Love

This simple shift helped me fall back in love with auditioning. Instead of rushing to just “get it done,” I aim to create something I’m actually proud of OR at least have fun while doing it.

Not every tape, mind you... There's only so many ways to bite a sandwich or wave hello. But for the auditions that excite me? I treat them like little short films & play with the art of acting.

This kicks off a new series: 10 Self-Tape Tips for Actors! These are small things that have helped me book more work and enjoy the journey (or should I say bumpy roads) of being an actor.

Coming from an acting background it was such an honour to write/produce this commercial for NC's acting program - a huge value was putting the students to work and creating a video that embodies the energy & quality of the program.

CALLING OTTAWA-ISH ACTORS!

PROJECT: CALABOGIE!

ABOUT: MRP Studios (www.mrp.tv) is producing a commercial in & for Calabogie! This is fun, celebratory, heartfelt & funny - focused on the best moments of cottage life. We are looking for a variety of actors who like outdoors & adventures. Bonus to actors with families or partners they are willing to work with.
FILMING: June 17 and/or 18, 2025 (actors will be needed for 1 day)
LOCATION: Calabogie, ON (obviously)
COMPENSATION: $500/day including travel, your own wardrobe + usage
UNION: Non-Union only

THE SPOT: This is a playful, memorable commercial that uses a single word - you guessed it… “Calabogie” - to express alllllll the feelings that come with cottage life: joy, awe, silliness, peace, expletive, cheer. CALABOGIE is the word! Set to a fast-paced montage of Calabogie moments: lake jumps, sharing meals, cold plunges, roasting marshmallows, soaking in your best life. Whether it’s shouted in triumph or whispered with wonder, Calabogie becomes memorable.

ROLES APPLY FOR

FRIENDS/COUPLES - 30s-40s - all demographics - Real friends & couples are strongly encouraged to apply! These are adventure seekers who love cottage life. Whether it’s hopping off the dock, playing a card game or chilling in a sauna. This group is living their best life. Smiles & joy are important. Some will be paired into couples or friends groups. Let us know if you are comfortable swimming, in a sauna, cold plunge and/or hot tub.

MOM & DAD, 40-50s - Real families are strongly encouraged to apply! We are looking for mom & dad with 2 kids between 4-12. These two love each other & the family. They’ve worked hard to afford cottage life, and anytime they are in Calabogie - they are in their happy place.

KIDS between 4-12 - Again, real families are encouraged to apply! These kids will run around, playing with each other, mom, dad & grandma & grandpa. There’s fishing, hiking & bonfires to be had!

RETIRED COUPLE, 65+ - Man & woman. Real couple encouraged. Looking for healthy, adventurous retired couple. They love Calabogie & cottage living. They are spending time up there together, and with their kids & grandkids.

So our video production company is a little insane. This is 1 of 9 commercials spots we shot over 2 days... 2 of which we wrote & recorded original music for.

Yes, that's a flex, but it's also our superpower when you have a recording studio & talent musician on staff...
🎵 We wrote & recorded the song.
🎥 We shot & edited the commercial.
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 AND we did it with a team of less than 10 people.

A core value at MRP Studios is creating content that gets maximum use for our clients. Building a 2 day shoot around 9 piece of content is a jigsaw puzzle & we loooooove doing puzzles.
