Extra Final

Record label and publisher. Extra Final is the publishing practice of artist, musician and designer Jud Crandall.

Launched as a craft record label in 2016, Extra Final has since issued 15 single, EP, and album length releases on CD, cassette, digitally, and in print. In 2022, Extra Final will begin publishing Illegal Bodies, Jud’s first comic work, expanding the imprint to include small press. Jud Crandall is a graphic designer, illustrator, collagist, musician, sound maker, and organizer, exploring spatial a

nd narrative possibilities in analogue and digital media. He has worked in broadcasting, publishing, education, printing, event planning, promotions, with volunteers, and freelance, for over 20 years. As an independent musician and sound artist, Jud's work has ranged from award winning groups Wooden Wives and The Organizers, to more abstract sounds and collaborations as Usse. Since 2015, this has included audio installations with Third Space, AX Arts & Culture Center, and SappyFest. Jud holds a BEd from UNBSJ, and has taught Broadcast Arts at InterAction School of Performing Arts. He became a founding member of Local 107.3fm in 1998, wearing all manner of hats from volunteer to Station Manager, before retiring as Programming Director in 2015. With his partner Emily, Jud lives and works out of their home in Saint John, NB, near the Wolastoq River mouth.

Humbled to have been invited to Heroes' Beacon's National Authors Day celebration, Friday, November 1, from 5-7pm! The gang will host a selection of local creators upstairs, for your meetin' and greetin' pleasure, to discuss, view and purchase their work. I'll have comics with me of course, including the few remaining copies my DCAF exclusive Art Edition preview of ILLEGAL BODIES upcoming Episode 06! Considering the intimate nature of the event, I may also bring some sketchbooks or art pages or something to that effect, but we shall see. Watch this space!

Dartmouth Comic Arts Festival - DCAF was yet another rewarding, illuminating experience as a relatively new cartoonist. Thanks so much to Cal and DCAF for the welcoming opportunity to table. ILLEGAL BODIES was kindly received by folks, and I look forward already to returning with more new work prepared in the future.

No pics of yours truly as I was flying solo and conserving phone battery for e-transfers, but I did have an opportunity during a visit from Emily Saab to scoot around with Vincent for a quick once-or-twice through, and pick up some goodies for the library.

Will try to tag some of the folks pictured here later, as the afore mentioned Vincent awakes. Thanks again to all encountered and here's to the next!

As we go into New Years 2024, dig this throwback to summer 2021! I had been reading Howard Chaykin's original American Flagg run, and it inspired this little helmet sequence that opens Episode 02. I initially penciled a dozen various panels on a sheet, and selected, cut out and taped these to the page for inking.

Great thanks to all who have supported my work in so many ways. I'm looking forward to carrying on everything built and learned thus far.

In addition to publishing PORTFOLIO ED 02 in the New Year, watch for introduction of a new Patreon.com/extrafinal subscription tier, wider distribution in the Maritimes, and most excitedly, the eventual release of ILLEGAL BODIES Episode 06!

PICTURED: Stephanie Tierney took the baton to create ILLEGAL BODIES pin-up art, as enthusiastically and as perfectly as I imagined. The only directive was to invent from her imagination, what vintage off-model poster, comic and concept art did for the original Star Wars movies. These brand divergent, dreamlike aspects always enriched the movies for me as a kid: a chiseled, chipped Philippe Druillet Darth Vader and legions, the foggily-formed sophomore novel Splinter Of The Mind's Eye, Carmine Infantino's broad (often bare) chested pulp heroes - all these things diffused the idea of Star Wars, making space for mystery and wondering. More recently, much of what works for me in something like The Last Jedi movie, are among those surreal, supernatural and science fantastic aspects present.

So thank you to Stephanie for the gift of this beautiful work, and please enjoy a glimpse of some process work, as well as placement in the book. Certain dictates of page sequencing landed this image here, and I couldn't think of a better place, almost like a panel of imagining inside the comic.

PICTURED: Annual 01's cover art comes from an unused splash page idea, which struck me as a potential cover design, inviting the viewer into the brain shoes of our protagonist. Tried India ink for the first time to get the bruised and bloodied effect, on a separate sheet you may notice, in the event of horrible wet failure.

SEND US LETTERS! Are you a regular reader of ILLEGAL BODIES? Picked up an Episode or two last year? Only just sorta heard of us? Your letters are welcome! Coming out later this summer, ANNUAL 01 collects Episodes 01-05, with new supplementary material featuring a good ol' fashioned letters page!

Review, crit, gaffs, or exhortation, I invite you to get it all off your chest! Letters may be edited for length and clarity, and inclusion will ultimately be up to what feels right for publication, but I would hope to share most anything that comes my way, space permitting.

Let's say for now that there is a deadline of July 15 to deliver letters via our website at ExtraFinal.com, or by e-mail to avantpulp at gmail dot com.

This may be a moving date as we complete work on the issue, so stay tuned, and dig a preview of new digital collage work created for the upcoming issue.
