Random piece of information: Keeping staplers, hole punches, printers and books alive is a major part of being a librarian. No wonder I have the collection and tools I have in my kit! Been into making cards and binding since I could fold a piece of paper. I have the kind of attitude that has me carefully picking out tools and hanging out to them forever, making good use of them time and time again. Takes time and it’s worth it.

Health Information Professionals Week is October 20-24!

When the pandemic upended the restaurant industry in 2020, Jennifer Keenan saw it as a chance to start fresh. After more than a decade in the service industry and time spent as a Security Officer at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, she was ready for a new direction—one that offered stability and long-term growth. That search led her to Health Information Management (HIM), a field that blends healthcare, technology, and data to ensure patient information is accurate, secure, and accessible when it matters most.

Through her studies and practicum experience, Jennifer discovered how vital HIM professionals are to the healthcare system. They’re the link between clinical care and the information that drives quality, safety, and innovation.

Today, as a Coding and Classification Specialist at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, Jennifer plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of health records — work that directly supports patient care.

“HIM opened my eyes to how much happens behind the scenes in healthcare,” Jennifer said. “It’s rewarding to know that what I do helps ensure patients receive safe, high-quality care.”

Whether you’re drawn to healthcare, technology, or data, Health Information Management offers a career that’s both stable and deeply meaningful — and, as Jennifer’s story shows, it’s never too late to find your fit.

Post music outlet affirmation: There are people out there who are more than happy to pay me for what I do.

It is so easy to forget this, especially when imposter syndrome sets in after a while. I sought out a comfortable creatrix role, photographer, recently that reminded me of my worth, ever so gratefully. I was able to sit across from my cancer therapist this week and say, “I bring a lot to the table”. This is also after I near fumbled a wonderful client when asked how much for a service, but thankfully she seen through me and honoured my time honourably. It’s so sad that worth can become clouded after being downtrodden. While mindset is a lot of it, experiences can sometimes totally hijack the nervous system and it takes an incredible amount of work to hitch that runaway trailer back up and say thank you very much for at least staying on the road. To anyone still dealing with feeling hijacked: it does get better, keep at it, keep courage and stand tall.

All in all, it’s my clients who make what I do so amazing and I thank every one of you!
