“Earth (Okâwîmâw Askiy - ᐅᑳᐧᒫᐊᐧᐢᑭᕀ)” is a 12-hour event that follows on the heels of 2020’s You, 2021’s And, 2022’s I, 2023’s Are and 2024’s Water. It is the sixth in a series of twelve annual events taking place on December 12 from 12 noon to 12 midnight. Each year the event moves through each word of the 12-word phrase, You And I Are Water Earth Fire Air Of Life And Death, to activate the word of the year in myriad ways.

FEATURING
Filippo Andreatta, Jessica Marion Barr, Christina Battle, Sepideh Behrouzian, Joshua Bonnetta, Andrew Denton, Tanya Doody, Ufuk Ali Gueray, Michaela Grill / Karl Lemieux, Jessica Karuhanga, Masha Kouznetsova, Ella Dawn McGeough, Erica Mendritzki, Sarah Messerschmidt, Joseph Naytowhow, Cassie Packham, Parsons & Charlesworth, Danielle Petti, Laura St. Pierre, Dawit L. Petros, Jackson 2bears, Arielle Walker, Aurora Wolfe, Worried Earth, Melanie Zurba, and more.

STATEMENT
The word ‘earth’ when preceded by a direct article becomes planetary, the Earth. This proximity shifts our understanding of ‘the substance of the land surface; soil’ into ‘the world’. It moves from ground under your feet and soil you can hold in your hand, to expanse you walk on and territory you live within. This perceptual transformation makes clear the potency of spatial relationality in language and worldmaking and opens the parallel in this year’s title and prompt, Earth (Okâwîmâw Askiy - ᐅᑳᐧᒫᐊᐧᐢᑭᕀ).

Revitalizing Radio!

EARTH DAY, Tuesday, April 22, 2025

Join a growing Earth Day tradition. Tune in to the 9th annual 24-hour Wetland Project slow radio broadcast.

Artists Brady Marks and Mark Timmings invite you to fill your home, work, vehicle and leisure spaces with the resonant sounds of birds, frogs, insects and airplanes! Immerse yourself in the vitality of the 24-hour circadian rhythm of the ṮEḴTEḴSEN marsh in unsurrendered W̱SÁNEĆ territory (Saturna Island, British Columbia). The broadcast engages its audience in real time and stimulates a powerful re‑engagement with the living environment. At a time when the world is in great turmoil, slow radio offers us a life-affirming space to reflect on a more lucid and caring future.

Radius will rebroadcast the global radio event Soundcamp | Reveil, a 24-hour radio broadcast based in London that tracks the sunrise around the globe. 2025 marks Radius’ twelth consecutive year of partnership with Soundcamp | Reveil.

Repost

REVEIL will embark on its 12th loop around the sun on Saturday 3rd of May at 5am
UTC+1 and will complete its journey on Sunday the 4th of May at 6am.

Reveil is a collaborative sound and radio project that circles the Earth on live audio
streams at daybreak. The last broadcast featured 145 streams from a wide range of
environments and situations.

Many streams come from soundcamps: small or very small gatherings in places of
ecological and acoustic interest. Last year there were 26 soundcamps in a variety of
locations – rural, urban and in between. Reveil will be mixed from a hub at Stave Hill
Ecological Park in Rotherhithe, South London, and stations in Sunshine Coast,
Valparaíso and Chania.

More info and to listen: https://soundtent.org/reveil/

Soundcamp 12 is a project of the Soundcamp Cooperative with Stave Hill Ecological
Park (TCV) and the Acoustic Commons network.

Streams are part of the live soundmap project operated by Locus Sonus at ESAAIX,
Aix-en-Provence. They also come from independent projects and the environmental
sound community at radio.earth.

The Reveil main mix will be hosted by Wave Farm in Acra, Upper Hudson Valley, New
York, our US broadcast partner since the first edition. Resonance Radio is our long-
term UK broadcast partner. The show is carried each year in whole or in part by a
netwrok of participating FM and net radio stations.

Listen to Radius Episode 94: Lia Kohl “Untitled Radio (futile, fertile)”.

Lia Kohl is a cellist, composer, and multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago. She creates and performs sonic landscapes utilizing cello, synthesizers, field recordings, and live radio to explore the mundane and profound possibilities of sound.

The basis of Lia Kohl’s Untitled Radio (futile, fertile) is a series of improvisations with live radio static, created while in residence at ACRE in northwestern Wisconsin. ACRE is situated outside of Steuben, WI, an area rural enough that pockets of it get little to no radio signal. Instead, the FM signal offers a rich and varied palette of drones, percussive stutters and pops, prompting the ear to invent myriad sonic architecture: harmonies, melodies, landscapes. Kohl is drawn to the radio for its particularly physical expression of sound; these waves are all around us, all the time; broadcasting weather and emergencies and prayers and pop tunes, we only have to turn it on to hear them.

Radius Episode 94: Lia Kohl will broadcast for five consecutive weekday mornings on January 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 2022 at 9:00 AM CST.

Tune in locally on 89.7-FM in Heart of Chicago neighborhood and streaming worldwide 24/7 at http://theradius.us.
