The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) led by suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny on Monday criticized the recently announced electoral timetable, describing it as premature and warning that key political and security conditions required for credible elections have not yet been met.

This came a few hours after the National Election Commission announced 22 December 2026 as the date for the country’s long-delayed general elections.

🚨| A five-day-old baby boy has sustained a severe head injury following a shooting incident which killed the mother, father, and their older daughter in Tonj East County in Warrap State.

Police Inspector Sergeant Deng Akuen told Sudans Post that the attack occurred at around midnight on Saturday at Thiok-Kuel cattle camp after armed assailants reportedly opened fire on the family of four.

The infant is currently receiving emergency medical care at a hospital in Tonj South County, where doctors are working to stabilise his condition.

“The mother, father, and their older daughter were killed at Thiok-Kuel cattle camp. The suspect remains at large,” Sgt. Deng said.

He appealed to residents to assist authorities with any information that could help locate the attackers and ensure the child receives continued support during recovery.

As cattle raids and revenge killings continue to affect communities across Greater Tonj, Gogrial, and Twic areas, authorities say restoring calm remains a major challenge. They have repeatedly urged cattle keepers to avoid isolation, strengthen communal protection, and rely on formal security mechanisms rather than retaliatory action.

Despite these appeals, insecurity linked to cattle rustling continues to destabilise parts of Warrap State, with communities frequently accusing neighbouring groups of cross-border livestock theft and retaliatory violence.

The United States has warned that mass atrocities may be imminent in Sudan’s El Obeid, after reports indicated that the Rapid Support Forces and allied forces are massing troops around the strategic city in a development Washington says sharply increases the risk of large-scale violence against civilians.

The warning, issued Monday by U.S. State Department spokesperson Thomas Tommy Pigott on behalf of the United States Department of State, comes just days after senior United Nations officials raised alarm over an imminent military escalation in El Obeid and called for urgent international action to prevent a repeat of atrocities seen elsewhere in Sudan’s conflict.

🚨| SPLM-IO Acting Chairman Oyet Nathaniel Pierino has threatened to block and detain voter registration officials entering the opposition-controlled areas, hours after the National Election Commission announced that the general elections will be conducted on 22nd December 2026.

“Anyone coming to register voters and campaign in territories controlled by the mighty SPLA-IO, you will be a prisoner of war, at worst, dead. Be reminded, the country is at war,” he stated in a Facebook post seen by Sudans Post on Monday.

🚨| South Sudan could hold its first-ever general elections on 22nd December 2026, three days before Christmas, the National Election Commission Chairperson, Prof. Abednego Akok Kacuol, has announced on Monday.

But the chairperson also raised concerns over legal gaps and resource scarcity as key challenges facing the commission, which, if left unaddressed, could jeopardise preparations for the highly contested poll.
