Welcome to the first chapter in the ballad of Jack and Zoey, with a Y. (Inspired by Blue Sunday and other assorted lyrics...)

I hope you enjoy a different kind of episode today! Sometimes ideas hit you hard and quickly and as I was driving around on Monday evening listening to Blue Sunday on repeat, a story began to unfold in my mind, so I thought I'd share it with you. The trick is always to get it all down on paper before the squirrel in my brain runs off with all the nuts!!!

It's Blue Sunday on a cold Wednesday up here in Saskatoon!

“Well the moon sank as the wind blew
The street lights slowly died…”

It’s cooling down up here in Saskatchewan folks but the hoarfrost and the frozen winter sky sure is pretty!

For some reason, in my mind’s eye I always picture The Wild One, Forever being a winter song!

In a 2006 Rolling Stone interview, Tom credits Ron Blair’s return as being pivotal for the band saying, “The band has a good family atmosphere that wasn't there for a while. It came back about a year or two ago. I think when Ron Blair returned, it really bonded us back together in a weird way. If he hadn't been there, I am sure it would have been the end of the whole thing when Howie died. Ron stepped in and had this huge enthusiasm through the whole thing.” He goes on to say “When he first quit, he didn't quit the band, he quit the whole music thing. He was fed up. But we were all young boys then. When he got interested in music again, he started playing with Mike quite a bit, and so he was just there when we needed a bass player for the last two tracks we did for The Last DJ.”

I had to share this screenshot from The Villages Daily Sun down in Florida, which ran a three-page spread on the wonderful Shawn Murphy and his outstanding Tom Petty Trail website. Shawn was the other storyteller at this year’s Weekend in Gainesville, and I knew everyone would love him and his passion for mapping out all the key locations - and so many of the fleeting moments - in Tom’s life down south.

It was brilliant to see the love in the room for what he’s doing, and it warmed my heart to hear how many people now use his site to navigate the major must-visit spots. Shawn is one of the most decent genuinely and passionate people you’ll ever meet, so it’s fantastic to see his work getting noticed and recognized in such tangible ways.

If you haven’t checked out the site yet, please do. Even if you’re not in Gainesville or planning a trip soon, it’s filled with background context, little links, and great stories - I know you’ll find it fascinating!
