There’s a weight to the arrangement of this song, accentuated by that heavy kick pattern that Steve Ferrone opts for, along with Tom’s deliberate persistence in landing on the root note at the end of his phrases that makes this one compelling. It’s also noteworthy in not really having a defined chorus. We do have that A section and B section, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a chorus, then you have a very short bridge at the end so you have an ABABAC structure that just adds to the unresolved tension and unease that pervades this little hidden gem of a song.

The first time I ever sang in front of other people — really sang — was in my friends Jasen and Sharon’s living room, with a USB microphone in one hand and a Rock Band controller nearby. The song? “Paranoid.” The frantic riff, the driving pulse, and a vocal part that was right at the top of my range.

That moment changed a lot of things for me. Afterwards, I had people telling my they didn’t know I could sing and what was I going to sing next. It gave me confidence in my voice and made me realize that I can actually carry a tune. Singing “Paranoid” wasn’t just a party game; it was the first time I felt like I could actually perform.

Ozzy didn’t know me. He didn’t know my friends. But in that moment, standing in that room with a toy mic and real nerves, he helped me find my voice. I’ll be eternally grateful for that.

It’s often been remarked that Mike sometimes sounds like Tom when he sings. If you listen to the Dirty K***s albums you do hear some of those inflections peeking out from time to time, as you’d expect. But this goes both ways and I think Tom actually sounds a lot like Mike on About to Give Out - particularly in the verses. If you heard this on a Dirty K***s record I don’t think you’d immediately catch that it was Tom and not Mike.
