The older I get, the more I realize that community is not the same thing as belonging.

You can be surrounded by people and still feel alone.

You can be part of multiple groups and still not feel supported.

You can attend every networking event and still feel disconnected.

Because community isn’t built through proximity.

It’s built through reciprocity.

Through giving and receiving.

Through showing up.

Through asking for help.

Through offering help.

Through extending grace.

Through accountability.

Through being known.

Many women tell me they want more community.

But I wonder if the better question is:

✨ What do we actually want from community?

Do we want support?
Friendship?
Accountability?
Witnessing?
Encouragement?
Practical help?
Belonging?

And perhaps an even harder question:

✨ What does community require from us?

Because healthy community isn’t just about finding the right people.

It’s about becoming the kind of person who helps create the kind of community we’re longing for.

That’s where belonging begins.

I asked our Co-Lab girls a question last week — ‘what do you long for from other women?’ and it was my own response that really struck me.

First off, I don’t think I ever gave myself permission to ask that question.

Secondly, my inner self said — affection

Wow, not only have I pushed away affection from my friendships because I felt undeserving or unloveable, but it’s also the thing I long for the most.

I realized it was my fear of rejection causing me to be guarded around receiving affection.
Will I be too much?
Will they leave me later?

I have had a few close friends in the past break thru these walls and I’ve only recently been able to name it.

I am so grateful for the safe women in my life who have helped me receive their love, and taught me that I am not only deserving of it — but easy to love.

We strive to create this space at The Well, where you can let down your guard enough to self reflect, and give yourself permission to ask for, and receive, what you’ve been longing for.
