Winter is coming⦠and Sault Police want you to be a prepared driver. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service recognizes November as Winter Driving Preparedness Month.
βIf you prepare for winter driving before the snow gets here, youβre much better equipped to handle whatever comes your way this winter,β says Sergeant Joe Poderys, Traffic Services. βTake time to check your vehicle, stock it with essentials, and adopt a more cautious driving approach. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping you - and others - safe.β
Winter driving preparedness involves making sure your vehicle is properly equipped β inside and out β as well as a shift to an even more cautious mindset.
Sault Police recommend doing the following:
π Change to winter (snow or studded) tires and check tire pressure and tread depth regularly
π Check to make sure your windshield wiper blades are fully functional and do not leave streaks; replace if necessary and consider purchasing winter wiper blades
π Check to make sure all lights and signals are working
π Ensure you always have at least half a tank of gas and plenty of wiper fluid rated for -30 degrees
π Keep your vehicle well-stocked for emergencies:
βοΈ Snow brush/ice scraper
βοΈ Shovel
βοΈ Road salt, sand, cat litter, or other gritty substance for traction
βοΈ Extra wiper fluid
βοΈ Jumper cables
βοΈ Tow strap
βοΈ Flashlight and batteries
βοΈ Basic tools
βοΈ Cell phone and charger
βοΈ Sunglasses (to reduce glare from snow)
βοΈ Gloves, toque, warm clothing, extra socks and shoes
βοΈ Blanket
βοΈ Reflector, flares, or brightly coloured cloth
βοΈ Candle in a deep can and matches
βοΈ Water (in small bottles for quicker thawing) and non-perishable snacks
βοΈ First aid kit and essential medications
π Give yourself extra time to warm up your vehicle and scrape off frost or ice to avoid rushing to work or driving with an obstructed view
By following these recommendations, you can help keep yourself and others safe on our roadways this winter.
