Maxwell Livingston Smith, légende du reggae mieux connu sous son nom d’artiste Max Romeo s'est éteinte à 80 ans, le 11 avril. En 1976, il a enregistré son classique ‘War Ina Babylon’, au légendaire Black Ark studio de Lee Perry, album qui figure souvent parmi la liste des 10 ou 20 albums incontournable du reggae. Cet album comprend les classiques ‘One Step Forward’ et ‘Chase The Devil’. On y retrouve des commentaires sociaux percutants, tel ‘Uptown Babies Don’t Cry’ (cause they don’t know what hungry Is like). La version 12-inch de ‘Norman' (The Gambler) présente le producteur Lee Perry au sommet de son art. Max Romeo a débuté sa carrière en 1967 au sein de la formation ’The Emotions’. En tant qu'artiste solo, il enregistre ses premiers 45 tours pour Bunny Lee en 1968. C’est d’ailleurs cette année-là qu’il enregistrera son classique ‘Wet Dream’. En effectuant un survol de sa carrière sur l’excellente base de données Roots Knotty Roots, on constate qu’il a enregistré plus de 200 45 tours pour une quinzaine de producteurs jamaïcains entre 1968 et 1985. Les producteurs qui reviennent le plus fréquemment sont Bunny Lee, Lee Perry, Derrick Morgan, Keith Chin, Rupie Edwards, Pete Weston, Alvin Ranglin et Niney. Après 1985, Max Romeo est demeuré actif en enregistrant, entre autres, pour Jah Shaka, Mafia & Fluxy et Mad Professor. Il a effectué sa tournée d’adieu en 2023. En 2019, il enregistrait du nouveau matériel pour l’étiquette Baco, don’t l’excellent ‘The Farmer’s Story’ qui rappelle à quel point le métier de fermier est essentiel et très peu valorisé dans nos sociétés contemporaines.
