CHAR Technologies has received additional assistance to help grow its operations in Ontario thanks to $2.25 million in funding courtesy of the Government of Ontario’s Forest Biomass Program. The funding will help the company scale up its commercial pellet operations, which is produced from sawmill residuals and other underutilized wood.
Canadian Biomass was in attendance for the announcement made at CHAR Technologies Ltd.’s production facility in Thorold, Ont.
According to the Public Service Alliance of Canada, more than 200 of its members at Natural Resources Canada have recently received notices that they may lose their positions as part of the federal government’s plan to cut tens of thousands of positions over the next three years.
According to the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, the potential cuts will hinder the country’s capacity to monitor , as well as other disasters.

CHAR Tech has offered an update on the Thorold Renewable Energy Facility.
From January 26 to 28, 2026, Yellowknife will host a premier in-person event for Canada’s bioenergy sector: the Arctic Bioenergy Summit and Tour.
Organized by the Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) and the Wood Pellet Association of Canada (WPAC), and sponsored by the Government of Northwest Territories (GNWT), with media sponsor Canadian Biomass, this event is in lieu of the 2026 edition of the online Northwest Territories Biomass Week, traditionally held the last week of January, which attracts upwards of 300 participants each year.

Global renewable energy producer Drax has announced that it will be closing its wood pellet plant in Williams Lake, B.C. at the end of 2025.
The decision stems from a significant reduction in affordable, available fibre due to curtailments and closures of surrounding sawmills, as well as the loss of a bid for locally supplied fibre.
