As Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) mandate liquid fossil fuel suppliers to reduce the carbon intensity of fuels by 15 per cent by 2030, the demand for professionals skilled in life cycle assessments (LCA) continues to surge. In response to this rising need, the BC Bioenergy Network (BCBN) and University of British Columbia (UBC)’s Faculty of Forestry are expanding their educational offerings with two new advanced online micro-certificate programs designed for experienced professionals.

Advanced LCA of Clean Liquid Fuels, launching on Oct. 6, 2025, will provide technical training in modelling biodiesel, renewable diesel and SAF pathways. This micro-certificate will focus on modelling hydrogen and renewable natural gas (RNG). In spring 2026, Advanced LCA of Gaseous Fuels will provide in-depth, hands-on training for practitioners in the clean fuels, LCA or policy space with previous modelling exposure.

“These next two micro-certificates are more of a deep dive into using models and getting […] people a lot more hands-on experience with a variety of different fuels that they can use and translate for submitting a carbon intensity application under the two different programs in Canada,” explains course instructor Anna Ringsred Beavers.

One of the first steps to ensuring dust mitigation best practices in sawmills, pulp mills and wood pellet plants is performing dust hazard assessments.

Why are they so important?

Diane Cave, a 20-plus years veteran on the design, installation and retrofitting of dust collection systems, answered this question for Canadian Biomass to kick off 2025.

Read her column, the first in a three-part series of DHA-related articles, here:

Welcome to Dust Safety Week!

On behalf of Canadian Biomass, Canadian Forest Industries, and Pulp & Paper Canada, welcome to our ninth annual Dust Safety Week!

Every employer in Canada’s forest products sector will tell you that nothing is more important than ensuring the safety of the hard-working people in their sawmills, wood pellet plants, pulp and paper mills, and other wood products manufacturing facilities.

The Dust Safety Week home page is the hub for pellet plants, sawmills, and pulp and paper operations to learn best practices and find the latest information year-round on keeping their operations and operators safe.
Join us as we turn the spotlight on dust safety best practices, technical information and solutions!

Throughout the week we will be sharing:
• The latest news regarding regulation changes to dust safety
• Profile stories from operations that focused on dust mitigation
• Technical articles on dust safety
• Spotlights on dust safety equipment
• Columns on combustible dust best practices
• and more!

Special thanks goes out to this year’s sponsors who made Dust Safety Week possible: Fike, Fagus GreCon, VETS and SonicAire!

Check out our landing page and social media ( ) for the latest stories during Dust Safety Week 2025.
