This week, the first of a two-part series entitled Built to Last, featuring Chamber member Bulkley Valley Agricultural and Industrial Association. We’re going to focus on the Smithers fall fair, and more precisely, Grandpa Boonstra’s tractor collection.

We’ll hear from Jan McClary on the Bulkley Valley Exhibition and some of the work that goes into our annual fall fair. Then, a very homey conversation with John Boonstra on his tractor collection, and a bit of the history of tractors generally. We’ll also hear from Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako director Mark Fisher on how tractors impact the future of farming.

Food trucks and trailers are mobile restaurants, gaining popularity with vendors and diners alike. They’re less expensive to operate and are a convenient and fun dining experience. Our own Smithers Chamber has opened a farm-to-fork food trailer that celebrates community entrepreneurship and chamber member growers, farmers and food producers. And the biggest surprise of all? It’s non-profit!

Hear from the Chamber’s food trailer supervisor Savannah Parsons, whom was interviewed briefly during the soft opening in mid-July. Then, some background on the food trailer business with Smithers Chamber Executive Director and project manager Sheena Miller, with a few more comments from Savannah.

Exploring National Indigenous Peoples Day

In this episode, we highlight the importance of National Indigenous Peoples Day, and how through our businesses and community organizations, we can be better allies in reconciliation. This not only strengthens our community, it makes social, political, and economic sense.

In the first half, Annette Morgan, Executive Director of Dze L K'ant Friendship Centre Society introduces the importance of bringing a community together at the Friendship Centre’s National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration. Miriam Colvin, a guest at the celebration, offers an excellent reason for being there. We’ll also speak with Wendy Wright, Director at the Smithers Public Library and Nadia, a representative of the Smithers Bridging Committee. Both of those organizations had tables at the celebration. And finally, some meaningful comments from several attendees, who took the time to share their thoughts with us.

The 40th Annual National Community Radio Conference

In this episode, we showcase the 40th annual Canadian National Community Radio Conference, which Christine Bruce attended June 1-3 in Kingston, Ontario on behalf of Smithers Chamber member Smithers Community Radio CICK 93.9. Hosting the conference is the National Campus and Community Radio Association, and a campus and community station CFRC-FM at Queens University. This year, CFRC is celebrating 100 years of radio and one of their most distinguished guests was Shelagh Rogers, a Canadian broadcast journalist and the host and producer of CBC Radio One's The Next Chapter. And, a CFRC alumna. Also on this episode, you’ll hear from Alex Freedman, the Executive Director of the Community Radio Fund of Canada, and the MC at the Radio Conference Gala. But first, Glen Ingram, the Station Manager at CICK, Smithers Radio and a presenter at the conference.

The Golden Triangle.

Smithers BC has a thriving economy with lots of locally-owned shops, strong businesses and some vibrant industry all working together. Most noon hours, Main Street bustles! And, Smithers is a tourist destination, a great spot for skiing, hunting and fishing. We have an art gallery, a museum, a movie theatre, a couple of craft breweries, and lots of great, local music. We’ll hear from Kendra Johnson, President and CEO of the Association for Minerals & Exploration and Elizabeth Miller, Vice President at Seabridge Gold Inc., mining affects Smithers almost to a greater degree than anything else.
