A rare moment in Toronto’s musical history.
In the early 2000s, Pandit Chitresh Das, the legendary Kathak maestro, invited his brother Ritesh Ji (Das), founder and artistic director of the Toronto Tabla Ensemble, to arrange one of his cherished traditional pieces β€” Sri Krishna Chaitanya, a classic Bengal kirtan β€” for performance in Toronto with the Ensemble.

At his request, Ritesh Ji created a new arrangement blending tabla with western drums and rototoms, bringing the devotional song into a fresh, powerful soundscape.
During rehearsal, Ritesh Ji sat directly in front of Chitresh Ji, playing tabla and singing, while Chitresh Ji danced and sang as well. Their voices were so alike that, at moments, it was hard to tell who was singing β€” two brothers in perfect sync, rhythm flowing between them.

This rare footage also features members of the Toronto Tabla Ensemble and other accompanying musicians, all part of this living exchange of rhythm, devotion, and family spirit.

It remains one of the only known recordings of the two brothers performing together β€” a glimpse of shared energy, love, and legacy.
The Toronto Tabla Ensemble shares it as a tribute to the Das family, whose artistry continues to inspire generations across music and dance.

πŸŽ₯ Announcing the First Video Podcast from Tabla Beyond Borders
After a year of the audio series, this marks the beginning of a new chapter β€” the first video podcast, produced by my senior student Shoumik Perugu.
In this next series, the conversation opens wider: we talk about life, tabla, discipline, joy, focus, breathing, and the spirit that connects it all.
It isn’t about performance or promotion β€” it’s about the rhythm of living, the ups and downs that music teaches us, and the quiet happiness that comes through awareness.
Shoumik asks, I respond, and together we explore what it means to live through rhythm.
