🥁 Tabla Classes in London – With Ritesh Das 🥁

The tabla is India’s most celebrated percussion instrument — two hand-played drums that create rhythms both subtle and thunderous. Rooted in centuries of classical tradition, tabla is also a truly global instrument.

✨ In Western Classical Music, tabla has been featured in symphonies and collaborations with composers like Philip Glass.
✨ In Rock & Roll, artists such as The Beatles and Led Zeppelin brought tabla into their iconic soundscapes.
✨ In Jazz & Fusion, greats like John McLaughlin (Shakti) and Zakir Hussain’s collaborations showed how East meets West.
✨ In Film Scores, from Richard Robbins (The Remains of the Day) to Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception), tabla’s pulse has added depth and drama.
✨ Even in pop culture — from Apple commercials to car ads — you’ve heard tabla’s unmistakable rhythm.

Now, you don’t need to go to Toronto — I am living right here in London, Ontario and teaching the London Branch of the Toronto Tabla Ensemble.

✨ Discover the Tabla – Ancient, Global, Inspiring ✨
With roots in India’s classical tradition over 3,500 years old, the tabla became the heartbeat of North Indian classical music and a voice heard worldwide. Its rhythms have crossed borders into Western classical, jazz, rock, Hollywood films, and world fusion — from The Beatles to Hans Zimmer to Peter Gabriel.
For over 40 years, the Toronto Tabla Ensemble, founded by Ritesh Das, has trained students, created groundbreaking collaborations, and brought tabla into Canada’s cultural fabric. Now this living tradition comes to London & Southwestern Ontario with the launch of our new branch.

Toronto Tabla Ensemble – London Branch presents
Open House | Sunday, September 21 | 3 PM
Springbank Gardens Community Centre
205 Wonderland Rd S, London, Ontario

The Toronto Tabla Ensemble has been a vital part of Canada’s musical landscape since 1991—bringing the rich heritage of Indian classical rhythm into contemporary performance, education, and global collaboration.
Tabla, one of the most sophisticated percussion traditions in the world, has long transcended borders. It has been featured at Woodstock through Ravi Shankar, in collaborations with The Beatles and John McLaughlin, and in the groundbreaking fusion work of Zakir Hussain with Shakti. The Ensemble continues this spirit in a distinctly Canadian context—composing original repertoire, training the next generation, and creating space for rhythm as both discipline and expression.
Now, for the first time, the Toronto Tabla Ensemble is expanding into Southwest Ontario with the launch of its London Branch.
This Open House will introduce the community to the Ensemble’s work, offer a preview of upcoming classes and youth training, and feature live performances by the Toronto Tabla Youth Ensemble and two emerging students from London. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet Artistic Director Ritesh Das and senior Ensemble members.

The tabla carries centuries of tradition — the pulse of classical India, the language of rhythm, and the artistry passed from teacher to student. It is music that speaks to both the intellect and the heart.

This September, the Toronto Tabla Ensemble begins a new chapter in London, Ontario, with an Open House on Sunday, September 21 at 3:00 PM at Springbank Gardens Community Centre. Hear the intricate rhythms of the Toronto Tabla Youth Ensemble, alongside talented students from the London area, and meet Artistic Director Ritesh Das and Ensemble members.

This gathering will launch regular tabla classes in London, bringing the heritage of India to the city and to Southwest Ontario — adding a tradition of depth, discipline, and beauty that will grow for years to come.

We thank MarioCercielli of Digital Creative Arts Centre Arts and the London Music Awards, and the Ontario Arts Council - Conseil des arts de l'Ontario for their support in making this vision a reality.
