On August 11, 1986, now 40 years ago, 155 Tamil refugees were rescued from two lifeboats drifting in thick fog near St. Shott’s, off the coast of Newfoundland’s southern Avalon.

Scared, exhausted and short of food and water, the refugees were rescued by local fishermen, led by Captain Augustine “Gus” Dalton.
