“He Stopped Saving It”

At first, he saved food.
That’s what dogs do when they still believe.

He hid it under broken cardboard,
tucked it beside the wall,
kept it for the one who used to come back.

But days passed.
Then nights that felt endless.

The food spoiled.
The smell changed.
And he learned a new truth without words.

No one was coming.

The street grew colder.
Cars slowed less often.
Eyes stopped meeting his.

Hunger stopped hurting first.
Hope lasted longer.

That was the cruelest part.

One night, he ate everything.
Not because he was full—
but because there was no one left to share with.

He curled into himself,
bones pressing against wet concrete,
listening to footsteps that no longer meant anything.

And when morning came,
he didn’t look up.

Because the hardest thing he ever learned
wasn’t how to survive…

It was how to stop waiting.

“The Sound He Never Forgot”

Every night, the city grew quiet.
And every night… he listened.

Not for thunder.
Not for cars.
But for that sound.

Footsteps.

They used to sound like home.
Soft. Familiar. Always followed by a voice that said his name.

The night he was left, the footsteps stopped too soon.
A door closed.
An engine started.
The sound faded.

He waited.

Rain soaked his fur.
Cold wrapped around his bones.
Still, he didn’t move.

Because dogs remember sounds the way humans remember faces.

Every passing step made his heart lift.
Every shadow felt like hope returning.

But no one called his name.

People walked past him with umbrellas and busy lives.
Some glanced.
Most didn’t.

He stayed anyway.

Because the sound he never forgot…
was the one he was still waiting to hear.

“He Sat Where He Was Left”

The rain didn’t scare him.
He had learned long ago that rain eventually stops.

What scared him… was silence.

Cars passed.
Lights blurred into long, glowing streaks.
Cold soaked into his fur, heavy and unforgiving.

Still, he sat.

This was where the door opened last.
Where a hand once reached down and said,
“Stay.”

So he stayed.

He didn’t understand why the footsteps never came back.
Why his name was never called again.
Why the night felt longer than it used to.

His body trembled, but not from the cold.
It was hope fighting to stay alive.

Every sound made his ears lift.
Every shadow made his heart race.

Is that you?
Did you come back?

But the rain answered instead.

People walked past him.
Some looked away.
Some didn’t notice at all.

He didn’t cry.
Dogs like him don’t cry.

They wait.

Because love, to them, is not something you turn off.
It’s something you hold onto…
even when it hurts.

And so he stayed there, wet and shaking,
believing the lie his heart kept whispering:

They’ll come back.
They always come back.
