HILLARY ANDALES, A SURVIVOR AND INSPIRATION
From surviving tragedy to making history—Hillary Diane Andales, a Grade 12 student from Tacloban, Leyte, has risen above life’s toughest challenges to become the Grand Prize Winner of the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, a world-renowned science competition with over 11,000 entries from 178 countries.
Her story is not only about science but also about hope and resilience. A survivor of Super Typhoon Yolanda, Hillary proved that disasters and hardships are never barriers to dreams. In her own words:
“Bilang isang survivor ng Yolanda, natutunan kong hindi hadlang ang sakuna o hirap para mangarap at magsikap. Ang premyong ito ay hindi lang para sa akin, kundi para sa lahat ng kabataang Pilipino na naniniwala na kaya nilang baguhin ang mundo sa pamamagitan ng agham.”
For her groundbreaking achievement, Hillary received about ₱20 million worth of incentives, including a scholarship grant, a significant reward for her teacher, and vital assistance for her school.
But for Hillary, the recognition is more than just a prize—it’s a reminder and an inspiration for Filipino youth to continue chasing their dreams, no matter how difficult life may be. Her journey shows that with courage, passion, and the power of science, young Filipinos can truly change the world.
