Faces of Addiction was created to share the stories of how addiction is affecting the lives of people in Cape Breton. This small area, on the east coast of Canada has the lowest average age when people start drinking in the country. Over fifty percent of young adult males are problem drinkers. The amount of needles being exchanged (Safe Programs) has been increasing at least 25% every year for way too long and we have hit staggering numbers.
Our addiction recovery programs can't keep up with the increasing addiction issue. Lighthouse / Undercurrent Youth Centres have called for a new approach. What if we worked on lowering the amount of kids and youth entering into addiction. This is our dream, our hope, and our goal. What if we addressed the root causes of addiction?
We are currently working towards creating several Lighthouse / Undercurrent centres across Cape Breton. Our present centre is one of the Island's main addiction prevention centres and we want to see these started in several communities.
If you would like to help here's how.
(1) Ask your local politicians how much is being spent on addiction prevention in your community. Here in NS, the amount spent on addiction recovery, health, policing, is incredibly high, while the amount spent on addiction prevention is far below what it should be.
(2) Get involved. Volunteer, and stay at a local group until you learn to be benificial.
(3) Give. Here is a link to our online giving page. You can give funds to our youth centres and 100% of the money will be spent on creating new centres, programs, and staff for youth here in Cape Breton - https://www.canadahelps.org/services/...
