Wildfire Update โ Wednesday, July 9, 2025
High temperatures and winds from the south gusting up to 50 km/h resulted in a lot of activity on the north side of the fire north of Thompson today. A planned backburn on the peninsula between Mystery Lake and the Burntwood River did not proceed due to wind conditions but Provincial Road 280 was closed starting at noon due to a portion of the fire crossing the highway to the northeast. The fire did not breach the fire break at the southwest edge of the fire. Helicopters were grounded after 4:30 p.m. due to smoke conditions. One more emergency firefighter crew joined the four wildfire crews already on the ground and another helicopter was added to the equipment fighting the fire.
Tomorrow is expected to see more high temperatures and wind out of the west at about 15 km/h. There is a possibility of rain in the forecast.
Value protection equipment continues to be set up at Mystery Mountain Winter Park, the golf course and the horse stables as well as at the airport fuel tank farm and at tank farms out by the industrial area and railway station.
Vegetation is being cleared at the airportโs North Hangar Road, around Manitoba Hydro substations and power lines and at the Vale Manitoba Operations site. Public Works continued clearing trees between the Millennium Trail and the shore of the Burntwood River. Up to four more bulldozers are expected to arrive in town tomorrow and to assist with vegetation clearing in the industrial are around the train station.
People in Thompson should complete the Preplanning Registration Form available at www.thompson.ca to assist with preparations in case an evacuation becomes necessary. This information will help for planning transportation for people without their own vehicles, preparing to help those with medical care requirements, and arranging accommodations.
