More than 35,000 households moved out of the Greater Toronto Area over the past year, with Calgary becoming the most popular out-of-province destination. About 3% of GTA movers — around 2,500 families — chose Calgary, where housing costs and larger living spaces are seen as attractive benefits.

Experts say families are considering a mix of factors, including affordability, job opportunities and lifestyle needs. This trend also includes many newcomers who first settled in the GTA before deciding to relocate.

Within Ontario, Simcoe County saw the highest share of departures at 10.4%, followed by Hamilton (3.2%) and Waterloo (2.9%). Calgary’s housing market remains relatively stable, with a benchmark price of about $568,000 in October and inventory levels close to the national average, contributing to its appeal for people seeking more space and manageable costs.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says the province is reviewing whether certain information from the s*x offender registry should be made publicly accessible. The review follows a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision related to sentencing laws.

Ford said many families want more clarity about safety in their communities, and the government is beginning consultations on possible legislative or operational updates. The current proposal mentions the potential to make limited information available, though no specific details or options have been finalized.

A new national study shows that about one in five immigrants leave Canada within 25 years of their arrival — a long-term trend researchers say has been gradually increasing. While many departures happen within the first few years, the report highlights how this pattern influences overall retention.

The study notes that skilled newcomers — including professionals in health care, science, technology and business — are more likely to move elsewhere, often due to challenges such as slow credential recognition, limited job opportunities in their field, and difficulty building connections with employers.

Researchers say strengthening retention supports and improving pathways for newcomers to fully use their skills could help more people build long-term careers and lives in Canada.

Cross Canada by Train for Just $558 🚆🇨🇦
A coast-to-coast rail journey across nearly 4,000 miles of Canada’s most breathtaking scenery is now more accessible than ever.

For as low as $558, travelers can make a 5-day trip from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic, covering 3,946 miles (6,350 km) through eight provinces and six time zones. The full route is completed using three VIA Rail trains:

• The Canadian (Vancouver → Toronto)
• The Corridor (Toronto → Montréal)
• The Ocean (Montréal → Halifax)

Beginning in Vancouver, the journey passes through the Canadian Rockies, the open prairies, the Great Lakes region, and onward to Québec and the Maritimes — offering a variety of landscapes and cultural experiences.

Trip Highlights

Vancouver: Stanley Park, Capilano Suspension Bridge, and local dining
Jasper National Park: Maligne Lake, Athabasca Falls, wildlife viewing
The Prairies: Farmland and wide-open landscapes in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba
Ontario Forests & Lakes: Thousands of lakes and dense woodland scenery
Toronto: CN Tower and a vibrant downtown
Montréal & Québec City: Historic streets, French-inspired cuisine, centuries-old architecture
The Maritimes: The Bay of Fundy and Halifax’s historic waterfront

Onboard Experience

Economy Class: Spacious reclining seats
Skyline Dome Cars: Glass-domed viewing cars for panoramic views
Sleeper Options: Private cabins, showers, and access to lounge areas
Dining Cars: Freshly prepared meals daily
Many trains also feature live music performances and social spaces where travelers can meet others.

Cost Options

• Vancouver → Halifax: Starting around $558
• Cross-Canada Rail Pass: $699 (with flexibility for additional stops)

Compared to flying or driving across multiple cities, which can be far more expensive, the train offers a comfortable, scenic, and stress-free way to explore Canada from coast to coast.

This cross-country trip is a unique opportunity to experience Canada’s natural beauty — from mountain sunrises to Maritime coastlines — all while traveling directly into the heart of major cities.
