Ya’ll want to go for a ride? Let me take you on a journey called “The Starlight Barking”— Dodie Smith’s original literary sequel to The 101 Dalmatians.
SPOILERS FOR THIS INSANE PLOT
- The book opens with every living thing on Earth falling into an unwakeable sleep—except Dogs (that’s right, we’re going fantasy with this one).
- In addition to being the only living thing awake, Dogs discover that they can a) communicate telepathically; b) open locked doors and gates with their minds; and c) fly
- In response to this new status quo, Pongo’s daughter appoints herself Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
- Her first decree is to send a squad of elite Dog Assassins to murder Cruella De Vil (because they assume this is all her doing).
- They are shocked to discover Cruella was not the one that put the planet to sleep and gave Dogs the ability to fly
- Instead it was a SPACE GOD FROM THE PLANET SIRIUS. This SPACE GOD invites all Dogs on Earth to come with him back to Blisstonia/Sirius, known for its high levels of Bliss, and live with him because he just really likes Dogs.
- The Dogs think about it and then go “thanks, but nah”
- THE SPACE GOD THEN FLIES BACK TO HIS OWN PLANET AND THE BOOK ENDS.
Thus is the canonical sequence of events that follow the narrative of 101 Dalmatians.
