On July 23, a russian missile destroyed the Transfiguration in .
This is the second time that russians have destroyed this historical monument. In 1936, the cathedral was destroyed by the communists, when Klim Voroshilov did not like the grandiose church in the city center. They blew up the bell tower, which brought down the main building. Before that, the cathedral was looted, icons, gold and silver jewelry were taken, and the bones of Prince Vorontsov and his wife, who were buried here, were thrown away.
The construction of the cathedral itself began in 1795, designed by engineer Vanrezant. The second restoration of the church began in 2000. Money was raised for its restoration from all Odesa residents. The cathedral is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Center of Odesa."
