Man.Of.Colour.
I took this photo 5 years ago and this is the caption I had. Now more than ever, I feel like the message is relevant. I never really understood the magnitude of what I was declaring over myself. Below is what 19yo me had to say:
This is a series of self-portraits I made as a statement: "I'm proud of my heritage and my roots and I am proud to be a man of colour." I refuse to be afraid to show my true colours, inside and out. As a young ambitious 19 year old filmmaker and I often find myself questioning the opportunities that may lye ahead of me. Not because I lack education, not because I’m in adequate but simply because I’m black. I’ve realized as much as I thought of myself as an equal I also thought of myself as less. I made this album to say I’m taking it all back. My Pride, My Roots, My Identity.
I leave you with this quote:
“It comes down to this: black people were stripped of our identities when we were brought here, and it's been a quest since then to define who we are.” -Spike Lee
