Howdy everybody! Just a quick blast to let you know that tomorrow (Friday, February 3, 2023) is BANDCAMP FRIDAY, where Bandcamp waives their revenue share. It's a good day to stock up on your yet-to-be-discovered All-Set! faves!

"On the first Friday of the month since March of 2020, we’ve waived our revenue share to help support artists on Bandcamp. Over the course of just those 26 days, fans have paid artists and labels more than $91 million USD. If you’re among the nearly 1.5 million fans who have participated, thank you.

The next Bandcamp Friday is February 3rd, and Bandcamp Fridays will continue in 2023 on March 3rd, April 7th, May 5th, August 4th, September 1st, October 6th, November 3rd, and December 1st. As always, isitbandcampfriday.com has the details.

If you’ve started to feel guilty about buying music on any other day of the month, here’s something to keep in mind: on Bandcamp Fridays, an average of 93% of your money reaches the artist/label (after payment processor fees). When you make a purchase on any other day (as millions of you have, with more than $1 billion now paid directly to artists), an average of 82% reaches the artist/label. Every day is a good day to support artists on Bandcamp!"

Hello Friends

Big news: the OG Aurochs line-up is back this month. Ali Berkok is returning from his new home in the eastern reaches for one night only of old-school Aurochs parallel play. Please join us if you can.

As always, the music may be improvised, but the beer is reliable.

Friday 25 Nov, 7:30 pm. Tranzac, 292 Brunswick Street, PWYC

Along with Ali Berkok on piano, you will hear Jake Oelrichs (drums), Pete Johnston (bass), and Mike Smith (miraculous frequencies).

And if you can stand even more good times, the Ryan Driver Sextet will once again play for the lovers - 10:30 till late.

BANDCAMP’s Juneteenth fundraiser is FRIDAY - A great time to stock up on All-Set! Edition recordings!

Friday, June 18th, from midnight to midnight Pacific Time, Bandcamp is holding their second annual Juneteenth fundraiser, where they donate 100% of their share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund to support their ongoing efforts to promote racial justice through litigation, advocacy, and public education.

June 18th would be a great time to fill out your catalogue of All-Set! Editions’ incredible (INCREDIBLE) catalogue, including the most recent couple of releases, Rob Clutton's The Music of Nick Fraser and the See Through 4’s Permanent Moving Parts, w/Lina Allemano, Michael Davidson and Jake Oelrichs!(links in the comments).

And hey...BANDCAMP is truly the best place to buy music so we’d just be happy if your ears connected with *anything* new, especially on Juneteenth.

On April 14 in 2016, Nick Storring and Ratio presented an event titled ‘Nick Fraser plays Justin Haynes plays Rob Clutton plays Nick Fraser’. Subsequently, Fraser released a solo album of compositions by Justin Haynes, and Haynes released a solo album of ‘radical translations’ of Clutton's music (all available on Bandcamp). This album begins to complete the circle.

Thanks again to Textura.org for the thoughtful review of the See Through 4's "Permanent Moving Parts"!

"Permanent Moving Parts is apparently Johnston's eleventh album as a bandleader, but you'd be hard pressed to find any sign of wear-and-tear. He's living proof that having a constantly rotating cast of partners to play with is one way of keeping things stimulating and fresh. Only Johnston knows which See Through outfit will appear next."

See Through 4 is a moniker for a rotating cast of Toronto-based musicians that play tunes by bassist Pete Johnston. On this outing Johnston is joined by Lina Allemano on trumpet, Michael Davidson on vibraphone, and long-time collaborator Jake Oelrichs on drums.

"Permanent Moving Parts" is the third album in a jazz trilogy, building on 2020's "False Ghosts and Minor Fears" and "Bog Standards" with more tunes that blur the lines between composition and improvisation in the tradition of the Jimmy Giuffre 3, Carla Bley, and Ornette Coleman, this time with some 1980s-era Rush mixed in to keep it real.

The critics have had this to say of our efforts:

“Intricate, contrapuntal compositions with inventive improvisation, incorporating concepts from electronic music, progressive rock and free jazz.” — Adam Feibel, Jazz FM, A guide to some of the best jazz on Bandcamp

“His compositions sound nothing like prog rock now, but the way his music sequences dissimilar segments will make sense to anyone who spent some time listening to side-long Yes and Genesis epics, even though Johnston never lets things get so out of hand.”— Bill Meyer, Dusted

“As a primer for the vivacity of the contemporary Toronto jazz scene, you could do worse than this set. It features four of the city’s finest players, combining to create a stomping post-bop masterclass.” — Chris Baber, JazzViews see less
