Wallo, the co-host of the influential podcast Million Dollaz Worth of Game, recently penned a heartfelt letter addressing the state of HipHop music. In his letter, Wallo made the claim that HipHop is going through "a metamorphosis" and that the era of gun-toting and drug references has begun “fading into obscurity.”
We've spoken previously on the changing nature of rap music as other genres have begun taking the throne in the charts. While HipHop is still a dominant player, music fans collectively seem to be less interested in some of the pillars that have carried the genre; opting for elements of pop, dance, and reggaeton, to be blended into the most successful rappers rhyme schemes. Music, naturally, evolves over time. The unfortunate truth is that often, artists fall behind on the current trends of their respective genres and the music scene as a whole. Holding onto and taking inspiration from the sound that inspired them to become a creator in the first place, even if it's outdated.
Wallo's message shines light on an inescapable truth for HipHop artists today, nobody cares about the "hardest rapper out" nowadays. They care about authenticity and creativity that resonates with them on an emotional level. They want you to tell a story about who you are, not just how "tough" you are. Rappers who adjust accordingly will be the winners of the most ears as the genre continues to evolve in the coming years.
