추가하다 (choo-ga-ha-da) “to add” 🧩

This is THE verb you’ll hear everywhere in Korea from adding someone on KakaoTalk to adding extra rice at a restaurant.

How to use it:

• 친구를 추가하다 → to add a friend
• 사진을 추가하다 → to add a photo
• 밥을 추가하다 → to add more rice

Real-life phrases:

• 저를 추가해 주세요! → Please add me!
• 연락처에 추가할게요. → I’ll add you to my contacts.
• 장바구니에 추가했어요. → I added it to the cart.

Korean past tense is super straightforward - you just drop -다 and add -았어요 / -었어요 / -했어요 depending on the vowel.

How to form it:
• If the last vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ → add -았어요 (가다 → 갔어요)
• If the last vowel is anything else → add -었어요 (먹다 → 먹었어요)
• 하다 verbs → 했어요 (공부하다 → 공부했어요)

One of the best things about Korean is that the verb *always* comes at the end. Let’s look at a simple room description:

**Pattern:**
[Location] + [items] + 있어요/없어요

**Example:**
> 집에 침대하고 책상, 텔레비전이 있어요.
> “In the house, there’s a bed, a desk, and a television.”

**Breaking it down:**
- 집에 house + location particle (에 = “in/at”)
- 침대하고 책상, 텔레비전이 bed, desk, and television (하고 = “and” between nouns)
-있어요“there is/are” or “have” (comes at the very end!)

Key Rules:
1. Verb last. Always. 있어요, 없어요, 가요, 먹어요 - it closes the sentence.
2. 에 marks location. 집에 = at the house, 방에 = in the room.
3. 하고 links nouns. 침대하고 책상 = bed and desk. Think of it like “and” for listing things.
4. No word for “a/an/the.” 침대 can mean “bed” or “a bed” - context does the work.

**Try changing 있어요 to 없어요:**
> 집에 텔레비전이 없어요.
> “There’s no TV in the house.”

Can you make a sentence about your own home? Start with the location, list a few things with 하고, and end with 있어요 or 없어요. 😊

🇰🇷 Korean Tip: Noun + 하다 = Verb!

Add 하다 (“to do”) to many action nouns to make a verb!

📚 공부 → 공부하다 = to study
🎵 노래 → 노래하다 = to sing
📝 숙제 → 숙제하다 = to do homework
🧹 청소 → 청소하다 = to clean

💡 Easy formula:
Noun + 하다 = “to do” that activity

⚠️ Not every noun can use 하다, but many common action nouns do!

🇰🇷 고 싶다 vs. 고 싶어하다 🤔
Both mean “to want to…” but they’re used differently!

✨ 고 싶다 = I / You want to…
👉 Use it to talk about your own feelings (or when asking someone directly).

저는 한국에 가고 싶어요.
I want to go to Korea.

뭐 먹고 싶어요?
What do you want to eat?

✨ 고 싶어하다 = He / She / They want to…
👉 Use it when talking about someone else’s feelings.

민수는 한국에 가고 싶어해요.
Minsu wants to go to Korea.

아이들이 아이스크림을 먹고 싶어해요.
The children want to eat ice cream.

Easy trick!
🙋 Me? → 고 싶다
👥 Someone else? → 고 싶어하다

🇰🇷 Korean Grammar of the Day: ~(으)ㄹ까? 🤔

💡 Meaning:
“Shall we…?” / “Should I…?” / “I wonder if…”

✨ Use it to:
✔️ Make a suggestion
✔️ Ask what to do
✔️ Wonder about something

Examples

Shall we eat?
같이 먹을까요?

Should I call?
전화할까요?

I wonder if it will rain.
비가 올까요?

🌟 Quick Tip:
• Verb + ㄹ까요? → after a vowel or ㄹ
• Verb + 을까요? → after a consonant

Korean Grammar Highlight: Irregular ㄷ Verbs!

Some Korean verbs don’t play by the rules 😏 and ㄷ irregulars are a perfect example!

👉 Rule:
When a verb stem ends in ㄷ, it changes to ㄹ before a vowel (like 아/어, 으면, etc.)
BUT stays ㄷ before consonants.

Think of it like this:
vowel comes in → ㄷ softens to ㄹ

Examples:
✔️ 걷다 (to walk) → 걸어요 (I walk)
✔️ 걷다 → 걸으면 (if I walk)

But:
✔️ 걷고 (walking/and walk) — stays ㄷ because “고” starts with a consonant

Want to describe nouns in Korean like “a big house” or “a pretty person”? You’ll need this! 👇

Adjectives can modify nouns using 은 / ㄴ

🤓Think: “the ___ noun”

* If the adjective has a final consonant (받침) → 은
* If NO final consonant → ㄴ

It’s like turning the adjective into “-ed” or “-ish” in English!

😊Examples:

1. 크다 (to be big)
➡️ 큰 집 = a big house
2. 예쁘다 (to be pretty)
➡️ 예쁜 사람 = a pretty person
3. 작다 (to be small)
➡️ 작은 고양이 = a small cat
4. 맛있다 (to be delicious)
➡️ 맛있는 음식 = delicious food

😊Tip:
Remove 다 → then add 은/ㄴ
예쁘다 → 예쁘 + ㄴ → 예쁜

📚 Korean Grammar: ~기

Let’s learn how to turn verbs into nouns using ~기 👇

🧐What is ~기?
~기 is added to a verb stem to make it function like a noun — similar to “-ing” in English.

👉 Think: eat → eating, study → studying

😊How to use it:
Verb stem + 기

가다 (to go) → 가기 (going)
먹다 (to eat) → 먹기 (eating)
공부하다 (to study) → 공부하기 (studying)

🙂Examples (EN → KR):

1. I like reading books.
👉 저는 책 읽기 좋아해요.
2. Cooking is fun.
👉 요리하기는 재미있어요.
3. Speaking Korean is difficult.
👉 한국어 말하기는 어려워요.

🤔When do we use ~기?
✔ Talking about hobbies
✔ Making general statements
✔ Using verbs as subjects or objects

~기 often pairs with:
좋아하다 (to like)
