Now streaming on the TVO Docs YouTube channel: “California Typewriter” is a documentary portrait of artists, writers, and collectors who remain steadfastly loyal to the typewriter as a tool and muse, featuring Tom Hanks, John Mayer, David McCullough, Sam Shepard, and others.

It also movingly documents the struggles of California Typewriter, one of the last standing repair shops in America dedicated to keeping the aging machines clicking.

In the process, the film delivers a thought-provoking meditation on the changing dynamic between humans and machines, and encourages us to consider our own relationship with technology, old and new, as the digital age’s emphasis on speed and convenience redefines who’s serving whom, human or machine?

From the TVO Archives:

Let’s not forget - Superman didn’t just save the day; he saved superhero movies! As James Gunn’s new Superman is released, it’s worth reflecting on the O.G. game-changer - Superman: The Movie (1978). It didn’t just launch a hero - it launched an entire genre. Thanks to visionary director Richard Donner, revolutionary special effects teams, composer John Williams, and a spectacular cast led by Christopher Reeve, this film transformed superhero stories into mainstream blockbusters. Its Oscar-winning effects and heartfelt storytelling made audiences believe a man could fly.

This film set the standard and proved these stories belonged on the big screen. Without this milestone film, today’s superhero blockbusters might never have taken off.

From the TVO Archives:

The Oscar-winning special effects on the 1978 Superman film were truly groundbreaking, using never before seen visual feats that convinced the audience a man could really fly. While they may seem simple compared to today’s computer graphics, the innovative use of practical and optical effects – including front projection, miniatures, and clever camera work – was revolutionary at the time.

In an era when such technology was unheard of, these effects transformed the industry, setting a new benchmark for cinematic achievement. Without this milestone film, today’s superhero blockbusters might never have taken off.

Step inside the rhythm of “Carnival: They Can’t Steal Our Joy,” a documentary that returns Carnival to its 19th‑century origins in emancipation and follows its pulse into the present.

Told through the voices of those who keep the tradition alive today, this film, like Carnival itself, celebrates resistance and freedom. With an all‑access pass to the first post‑COVID Carnivals in Toronto, Canada; Notting Hill, UK; and Port of Spain, Trinidad, the film dives into the music, spectacle, and lives of the people who make it happen.

Premieres Sunday, July 27 at 9PM on TVO.
